Soy Protein......

Hey
I have been drinking soy protein shakes (2x day) for a little over two weeks now - man oh man my tummy hurts!
And the flatulence.....OMG.....I can clear a room!! (sexy right!?)
I'm just wondering what your thoughts are - Good or Bad??
I've done some research and I have to admit it mostly looks BAD!
I thought I'd lose weight faster by drinking 2 of my meals and then solid meal and 2-3 snacks but I am so hungry by mid day that I tend to eat more for my dinner
and this last week I gained a pound so that idea is shot!
anyways just venting but also looking for any info/tips/answers/etc
Thanks in advance
Heather

I took mine back simply on the grounds that the taste of it was so bad I had to force myself to drink it, after mixing it with any number of other ingredients to make it even remotely palatable.
I switched to whey protein (well, actually it's a mix of three kinds of protein) and never looked back.0 -
Do you need to drink 2 shakes to meet your protein macro? Or JUST for meal replacements?
And if only for meal replacements - no wonder you are starving. You should try eating something along with the shake. What good is it for you to do things that are just going to lead you to binge?
ETA: It might help you in the long run (mentally and physically) if you stop thinking of this as a race. Stop trying to do things that will just sabotage your progress. There is no quick way to lose weight or to make it go "faster".0 -
Soy = Estrogen
It messes with your hormones.
Bad news all the way 'round.
You can do better.
Eat real food - veg, meat, nuts, fruit. Can't go wrong.0 -
Soy as a protein source is highly controversial in the nutrition community because there are a large number of studies out there that show that consuming significant quantities can have a negative effect on hormone production and other health problems. However, there are other studies (usually conducted or funded by pro Vegan communities) that say otherwise.
Personally I veer on the side of the non-Vegans when it comes to soy and its effects on the body, because using soy based fillers/additives in food is one of the main things that started happening right around the time our health as a country started going to crap and obesity started going up.
If you intend on using protein shakes, stick with dairy based ones such as whey or casein. If you seek animal-free alternatives you should look to pea, rice, or hemp protein powder. Be warned, though, they taste like crap.
Also, what Joy_Joy said about taking it slowly is the way to go. Do not try to speed up this process. Just be happy with progress itself. Trying to accelerate things could lead to disaster, when it comes to both physical and psychological health.0 -

So...are Asian's immune to all this? Do we have food superpowers that I didn't know about? Hmmmm0 -

Take a good long look at the body structure of the average Asian man. Shorter, less prone to body hair, a much percentage of thin frames typical of "hard gainers." Is it linked? Maybe, maybe not. But if an American male walked into a Dr's office with those issues, the Dr would be ordering labs to check his T levels.0 -
I was using it as a meal replacement....
I love meat so that's not why I chose soy powder.
thanks - I really do need to be reminded sometimes that this is an ongoing life change, no quick fix. (DAMMIT!)
haha
I think I will be returning the soy protein and stick with normal healthy small meals with the occasional post workout shake.0 -

Those are guys that are put out on the media. I lived in Japan. There were a lot of "hairy" guys who weren't "thin". Have you been to Okinawa or Hokkaido area? Yeah....not really lacking in hairlessness there.
ETA: Okay..each their own. I know from experience what I know and you can believe what you will about soy. Sorry OP, didn't mean to turn your thread into a soy debate. :flowerforyou:0 -
Protein drinks, soy or otherwise, will not make you lose weight more than consuming a isocaloric meal with the same macros.
Soy: there are a lot of conflicting studies about the impact of soy. I tend to try to limit my consumption (but not eliminate) as I have a family history of estrogen receptive cancer, but that is really a keep my dosage reasonable as a 'just in case'. There are actually studies that show soy is good for people with metabolic issues.0 -

I work in public health and our primary patient base for the last 3 years has been immigrants from Asian countries (particularly Southeast Asia). While malnutrition is a factor for some (some of them did come in as refugees) most of them are very short, very thin, and are not exactly pictures of health later on in life, with many of them looking like they're in their 70s or 80s as young as their 50s. So whatever it is they do nutritionally as a culture is not an example to copy IMO.
EDIT: I spent most of my teenage years on a prescription medication that was later found to lead to T deficiencies when given to adolescent males. Today in my 30s I am still suffering some effects from it. Sorry, but when it comes to something as controversial as whether a product may or may not affect hormone production, I'm not taking any risks. I will err on the side of caution and I will ensure everyone who cares to ask is going to be educated about these possible risks as well.0 -
