Fasting vs. juicing

Okay, so I have done a 3 day fast when I was in high school, but already was super thin at that point. I don't know much about either of these, but would like to kick boost my digestive system, and kind of start fresh. I have lost only 4.5 pounds total so far. What is the difference really between fasting completely and juicing. And if I wanted to lose about 5 pounds this way...is it safe to do this? I heard it is spiritual as well as physical.

Any input on this would be soo greatfully helpful. I would love a little boost to keep me motivated, try something new and have fun with it! Also, with fasting, tell me about your experience if you've done it! i.e. did you stop working out?

Thanks!

Fasting, juicing = NO. Just eat right. There is no quick fix.

I'm not looking for a 'quick fix..' I am looking for something to make me feel clean and healthy and almost like 'empty' but I was looking for tips on doing this safely and advice. If there's people out there with experience let me know..

    Thanks! :)

Personally I wouldn't fast or juice. I've fasted before and I would not describe is as pleasant in any way. My advice (and this is just mine personally) if you want to "detox" or clean out your system would be to eat fruits and vegetables for a week. Nothing else. And at least 70% raw. Also make sure you don't go under your calories even if you're working out. This way you will get the nutrients your body needs as well as the fiber. I did this a while back and it was wonderful. I wasn't hungry, I learned a lot about different ways to prepare fruits and veggies that help me now, and I just felt cleaner as a whole. I've never juiced, but I know people who have and seemed to like it. If you must chose between the two, I would juice.
  • If you're talking about intermittent fasting, perhaps.
but if the fasting you're talking about is just not eating for days at a time, NO. Speaking as a RECOVERING bulimic (but really I'm more of a restrict-and-purge, not a binge-and-purge) it will not help you...trust me...I went two weeks without eating and lose about 15 pounds that way. And I literally mean all I had was green tea, black coffee, and gallons of water. You WILL regain the weight. PLUS more.
Juicing...I am not so sure of...because you are getting liquid calories only. I suppose if you had a healthy amount of calories and added protein, you could be okay...but I wouldn't recommend it.
Just do it the right way, okay?
I know that sounds weird coming from someone recovering from an eating disorder, but it's the truth...

you won't actually lose fat, just water, and it will come right back as soon as you eat solid food again.

A big problem with "I'm going on a (number)-day fast to lose (number) pounds": what's stopping you from gaining that weight right back once you've finished the fast?
    The answer: nothing.

Focus on changing your eating and exercise habits instead, and make your goal "healthier" instead of simply "thinner". It's hard work, and it will take a long time, but that's how it goes. QFT: There is no quick fix.

Edited to add: why do you want to feel "empty"? That statement worries me a little.

Thanks girl! This is what I was looking for! and to clarify, I was talking about intermittent fasting, not days at a time :)
I will try just fruits and veggies and water, tea. This seems like it could work for a cleanliness!

    Thanks again for this info!

I love eating healthy. I can continue to do this the right way. Just wanted more info on these things as I have heard great things about it spiritually from so 'health nut' people. But what I suppose Im getting is that it's not a good idea! lol. That's what I was wanting to know. Appreciate all the responses.

There are probably going to be a lot of various responses to this post, 'll try to give a nuetral perspective as I don't go on juice diets or any diets, but know plenty of people who love juicing and some I feel juice more than eat.

    1. Fasting just has no benefits besides starving, I don't recommend, nor do I recommend the lemon, cayenne, maple syrup trend. Whatever you lose will come right back with avengeance.

    2. At least through juicing you do get vitamins, but you also get zero fiber. For this reason if you have to go this routine I prefer the Vitamix. Also its important you are primarily juicing vegetables and adding only small amounts of fruits and veggies that are sweet like apples, carrots, beats. This is called cutting. You're only adding the sweeter to make it taste better.

    3. Why not just eat the food you're juicing? If you're going to juice an apple, just eat the apple, eat some veggies, saute some kale. It really isn't necessary to juice because you can restrict your diet and eat super clean without having to starve yourself ( yes I said clean back off). You can eat grilled chicken and veggies, grilled salmon with quinoa..you will ultimately get the same results and have quicker weight loss, but unless you can find a balance between consuming calories through foods you actually enjoy it wont last.

I prefer just staying at my prefered weight through lifestyle changes so I never have to diet. It might come off slower, but it doesn't come back. Having a balanced diet, staying active, and engaging in resistance training like weights, pilates, body weight exercises anything that keeps me strong. In fact when I focus more on a goal like increasing my strength or being able to do more push ups, I end up losing more weight, faster, and look better.

This is what I did and I've been losing 0.5 - 1.0 Lbs per day: Found out the minimum calories I can safely consume in a day, eat a balanced diet ( I could stand to eat more veggies but I'm trying, today was good I had a few! ) I did some juicing and would drink 2 glasses per day but I just subbed my veggies for the juice and I still ate other things especially protein because it builds muscle which burns fat. I made a conscious choice not to do the just drinking juice thing which I tried for a week before but what I didn't realize is this isn't really good for you because your body needs more than just veggie fruit juice, if all you eat is juice you won't get enough calories and other essential things your body needs so you'll go into starvation mode and when you come off the juicing or fasting your body will take everything you start eating and pack it on your body as fat because you just killed your metabolism by juicing, it's good to have juice just not as the only thing you eat. Eat a variety of foods, I know there are things I could do better but I try to eat mainly organic and things that have very little ingredients or preservatives in them, I eat stuff that is low in fat, sodium, sugar, and I think I'm finding the right balance for me because the weight is coming off and I feel great, I also exercise for 2 hours every day no exceptions and I don't eat back my calories, hope this helps you.
