Help, I Dont Buy Food.

Hello

Basically to cut a long story short i live with my girlfriend and her mum and her mother does the food shopping. Despite the fact im on a diet she continually buys bad foods and i don't have the funds to buy my own foods.

I recently got down to 15 stone and im now back up to 15 stone 8lbs!

I was just wondering if people could give me pointers with regards to my diet on a very basic house hold shop, here's my current diet and i know its not the best..

Breakfast; Special K or 2 Slices of wholemeal bread with butter.
Protein Shake
Lunch; Wholemeal bread with a deli filler i.e chicken and bacon or i just have a cheese sandwich. Also a packet of crisps.
Protein Shake
Dinner; completely varies could be chicken and a side of pasta could be spaghetti bolognaise could be sausages.

As you can see its not the cleanest of diets and i dunno what else i can do or even suggest at shopping, my target KCALS is 1700 btw.

Not sure what your daily life is like, but why don't you just get a job and pay for your own. Do you go to school? Maybe just work part-time.

More fresh fruit and veg is the obvious thing. Not sure why you're on the protein shakes. Most people's diets will provide plenty of protein the only time you may need extra is if you are an elite athletes or body builder even then the science is questionable.

Diet looks really clean to be honest. I would include fruits and veggies and focus on finding foods that hit your macros and offer a good level of satiety. You could request some foods like oats, rice, meats.
  • Hiya cheers for replies..

Yeah i go to college and im shortly off too uni, i have a part time job as a bar man but the hours are very bad at the moment and im barely getting enough to pay my bills thats without any luxuries.

With regards to protein im not getting enough in my diet and a high protein diet is proven to aid to fat loss, i also weight train at gym 5 times a week so thats why i have them also.

Yeah i will try request them alot of people recommend oats etc, i just try to limit my carbs!

LOL. Umm it's fact that muscle tissue synthesis requires protein... that's what muscle tissue is. If you are trying to gain muscle tissue (bulk) then the constant micro-tearing of muscle during lifting needs some help for optimal repair/recovery.

But that being said yes if the OP is not really doing any regular strength/weight training then protein shakes are kind of a waste.

OP, Also a protein shake is NOT A MEAL. You need to be sure you are balancing your macros each meal. It goes deeper into body chemistry, hormones, etc. but if you can balance meals it will better serve your metabolism and your goals.

Do not dismiss the importance of healthy fats!

Unless you are carb sensitive, or have other issues, there is absolutely no reason to limit carbs. Carbs fuel your body.

The cheapest protein out there would prob be canned tuna, especially on sale. Canned foods are higher in sodium of course, but you can wash them and drain (I do personally). Also a bag of rice and beans will last a long time and is very cheap.

I had a similar problem when I lived with my in laws.... It is easily fixed by contributing some money for the shopping and providing a list of the things you need. You can't expect someone to accommodate you when you don't contribute anything

The biggest problem with home cooked meal is measuring the calories, especially if you don't use a food scale. But, if you manage to get an accurate count, you will still lose weight if you don't exceed your daily limit.

I'd cut out the Special K- have a closer look at the amount of sugar etc compared to other cereals (it's also not the cheapest of cereals)- how about switching to something like All Bran, Porridge, Wheetabix? It's great that you eat wholemeal but why not try a healthier olive spread?

I'd also try and swap the crisps for a healthier option- how about roasted soy beans- these are high in protein too. Sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, nuts?

Perhaps you could swap your sandwiches, even just once or twice a week for a salad? This way you have pleanty of calories left even if you have an unhealthy dinner.

Do you contribute to the household ie. rent or money for food?- if so you have a right to say' can you buy ...... please?'. If you do not contribute, how about trying to get your girlfriend to get on the fitness wagon too? That way it's not just you eating differently. Also you will have an exersize buddy!

I also agree with some of the above posts- try and get some more fruit/veg into your diet- I know they can be expensive, but try looking at frozen options- these are good value and keep for a long time so you have no waste.

Just some ideas. Hope it helps! Keep up the good work!
  • Seem that your problem might be more of how much you eat rather than what you eat. try portion control and calorie counting

Nowt wrong with carbs, but if you want to increase your protein intake perhaps add a couple of eggs to you bread at breakfast and more lean protein at lunch such as tuna or grilled chicken.

I had the same problem while I was at college full time and my parents provided my food for me.

My solution; I started looking for recipes in books and on the internet and offered to cook every night for them. That way I could choose the food, they didn't have to worry about cooking when they finish work, I got to eat my healthy food and improve my cooking skill and made my family slightly healthier in the process ;) without them realising :P

I wasn't a master chef or anything when I started but now I'm pretty awesome ;)
