suddenly starving...

I've coped fine on my cals, barely getting hungry, for months.

The last two days I've been starving and eaten up to maintenance both days and been looking for more.

I'm pretty much writing it off as the first two days of the hols and my routine changing, but is there another reason hmmmm.

Have you been through this?

I've only changed my (Hopefully lifelong) eating habits these last 2 months. The first month ended and I couldn't believe I'd had a full month without any cravings AT ALL but during the second month I did but drank water whenever I had them.

Your doing great though so just keep strong and down some ice cold water whenever you feel hungry :). Hope it works for you.

I don't buy the 'if you're hungry drink water' line as much now that i'm 8 months into this. . .

I dunno if it's hols, the fact that I haven't showed a loss in 2 weeks or just that I ran myself into the ground last week and was well under all week....

How far under we're you? Have you got more time on your hands at the moment? I always find I think about food more when I do.

I understand why you don't buy into it and granted I'm only 2 months into my journey all I meant is that that's working for me right now.

I had the same exact thing happen! When I first started a couple months ago the 1200 calories a day as working great! I now typically net 1300-1400 a day and find myself hungry so much more than when I started. Also craving man more things. I do know however when I first started I was eating much healthier foods (lots of salads, fruits & veggies) and now I have been craving a lot of processed crap. It still fits into my calorie budget and I am still actively losing so I try not to stress too much about it. But I can help but wonder if I might start feeling a little fuller if I worked on getting back to eating a little "cleaner" :(

Is it true hunger that you feel? or is it more of a craving and you think you're hungry? A change in routine can always upset things since you're not eating at the same times etc... but some days you just feel the hunger more. I know I had a day last week where I wasn't kept as busy as normal and hence paid more attention to my stomach...

I find that vegetables in particular (combined with a healthy portion of fat, protein and maybe some carbs) fills me up with fewer calories and keeps me full for longer.

It's when your metabolism revs up. Happens all the time. Make sure you go for a glass full of water before you go for food as you may possibly just be thirsty. Make sure your meals are full of fiber. Fiber makes you feel full for a longer time. Also, WATER! WATER! WATER! especially when eating lots of fiber filled meals. good luck :)

    That's very little...perhaps you're right?

As for the OP question there are all kinds of things that people will throw out there without more info. Like how big you are and what your lifestyle is like and how much you eat right now and how you are measuring cals. One thing I will say tho is a lot of people mistake the feeling of hunger with thirst. They feel the same. At the same time if you're hydrating yourself regularly then that's not going to be the problem and you shouldn't just water yourself down lol.

Changes in scheduled eating times can make one feel hungry (look up grenlin, it's like a food time keeper).

It could be that you're missing nutrients, it could be many things. Even when you're accurately measuring and weighing foods, they are all based on averages. So if you're feeling hungry, chances are it was under estimated.

Every once in a while I find I'm unusually hungry. I listen to my body & eat some extra (healthy, unprocessed) food, generally extra protein, fat & maybe veggies.

I never eat sugar, junk or processed foods so I know the hunger is not actually just a craving for junk. The extra food does not cause me to gain fat. I believe it is good to listen to my body; it knows what it needs.
  • Sometimes when we are hungry like that what it really is is thirst. Try drinking more fluids to see if that will satiate you. Head hunger is a horrible thing!! Good luck!

Funny you should ask.... MFP has a new Registered Dietician in their staff, and she made her first Blog Post this morning.
"Eat Smarter Using Your Hunger Cues" can be found here:

I also agree with an earlier poster who said it can be a sign that your metabolism is fired up. I also eat 1200 calories a day and, on the rare days that I feel hungry, I try to feed the hunger with lean proteins. I usually find that I've dropped a pound or two the next time I weigh in.

There's more and more research evidence that both sugar and artificial sweeteners can interfere with the brain's ability to recognize satiety. In other words, sweet makes you hungry even when you are not really hungry. It affects some people more than others.

Processed foods are often full of hidden sugars, especially the so-called "fat-free" versions. For example, the second ingredient in Land'o'Lakes half & half is corn syrup, AKA sugar. Kraft Singles American Fat-Free Cheese Slices contains dried corn syrup, AKA sugar. Pepperidge Farm Natural Bread 100% Whole Grain contains high fructose corn syrup, raisin juice concentrate, unsulphured molasses and honey, AKA sugar, Sugar, SUGAR, and SUGAR!!!

Naturally sweet foods can also have this effect to a lesser extent. When I feel the effect after eating fruit, I brush my teeth which seems to fight it down.

I can only eat around 1500 Cal if I want to maintain my weight...If I want to lose 1 lb a week, I can only have 1000. I know it's bad to eat under 1200, but I really want to lose 1 lb a week, just to get it over with. Therefore, 350Cal breakfast is over 1/3rd of my daily allowance. I weight lift for 40mins, 3 times a week, but that doesn't burn many calories at all.

    Here are my thoughts..:

i find coffee curbs my appetite.

I also find that being more hungry at times during weight loss is just a fact of the process. Look at it as you burning fat and getting skinny as you feel hungry.

Also..look at what you're eating compared to when you were not so hungry..there could be a connection? When I eat calorie controlled processed snacks..like baked chips, 100 calorie cookies..stuff like that.. i am so hungry all the time. I gave those up..and now I'm fine.

also..if you exercise and if you're eating 1200 calories a day... you're gonna be hungry.. that is just that.

the great thing about tracking your food on mfp..is you can figure out what works for you if you look at your successful days and weeks.
  • Hi, I go through periods of being at a stand still with weight loss so usually when I feel the way you do it means I'm about to start losing weight again. I have been felling that way the last few days and I've lost two more pounds this week. When I do feel extra hungry I've even gone a little over my calories and still lost weight I think it's your bodies way of letting you know your about to change again.

thanks everyone. i'm pretty sure my body just just playing with me. I was starving for two days then kinda disinterested in food for two and now my system seems to have levelled out.

BLAH but at least I think i'm back to normal now!
