I've been trying to lose weight for a few months now. Down 8 lbs, which is better than nothing at all! My biggest hurdle is staying motivated. I do real well for a few weeks at a time and than do poorly. I work in the medical field and work only 10 days a month (24 hours at a time though), so working out and eating right shouldn't be much of a struggle. We're able to cook at work or go to the store and buy meals if needed. Luckily, my partner is also trying to lose weight and eat right.

So what are some tips or tricks you use to stay motivated for longer than short periods of time?

Some people love the idea of making a lifestyle change, and will keep motivated because of this. For others, we need targets to reach rather than looking at the long year ahead. Ladies often use something like their wedding or the date of an upcoming vacation (swimsuit fear) as a goal to keep focussed - for say 3 months, instead of just a couple of weeks.

Perhaps you have something coming up in a few months that you can make your first target? (set another one afterwards!).

If you have nothing in the pipeline, then how about booking yourself a vacation to create one?

Or if that's not feasible, then a religious holiday or something like Thanksgiving will work just as well for motivation if you intend to gather with people who you haven't seen for a while - trying for the shock "OMG - You look great!" factor :D
