Fresh local shrimp & cheap!

When was the last time you were in a fish store that smelled neither of dead fish nor of cleaning products? I just got back from what rumor has it is the best fish store in town. Hadn't been there in years -- since the old owner -- OMG -- fresh large SC shrimp for 7.99/lb.! I just steamed some and am waiting for it to cool! I have a new favorite place to go -- a FRESH fish market with grocery store prices!! I'm in love! I think next time I'll steam 'em 5 minutes instead of 7 but they are soooooo sweet!

I'm always suspicious of "cheap" seafood... there's probably a reason its cheap. Like they destroyed the entire ocean in the process. Trawling, it's not worth it.

Shrimpers must have TEDs (turtle exclusion devices) installed on their nets these days. Trawling for shrimp is not done along the bottom floor, so I'm wondering what damage you think is occurring, other than small amounts of bycatch, it's healthier than foreign farm-raised shrimp (at least for the environment). Cheap shrimp is the norm in the carolinas....because it's locally caught and sold. You can buy it off the boat. Domestic farm-raised shrimp are actually the most environmentally sustainable and healthy way to harvest shrimp, but I have yet to find anyone who sells it.

BTW - your shrimp looks yummy.
