No longer thin

Hi all. I'm here because I turned 30, gained 50 pounds of jiggly fat (most of it in the midsection), and I want to lose it before it gets anymore out of hand. 18 months ago I was 5'6, 110 pounds, and had a 24 inch waist. Since hitting the big 30, I'm now 160 pounds and a 35 inch waist. My doctor just tells me to stop eating so much, but I don't think I eat much differently, if at all. Nothing seems to budge the weight, and its very embarassing meeting people I haven't seen in a while. They cant help but let their eyes wander to my belly, and some ask what happened. I had always been the the skinny, good-looking one in my circle of friends, and now I'm the biggest. A lot of people don't even recognize me, and that's worse. I feel like I've lost all my attractiveness, and of course, finding clothes that fit is impossible. A lot of people at the office used to be jealous of my figure, now they are all enjoying my gain. I want to turn back the clock! Thyroid checks normal, no PCOS. I guess my metabolism is just gone....

Logging food will help tremendously. I'd suggest a food scale and disher/servers to measure your portions. If you are truly not eating too many calories, you need to see a doctor. Good luck.

Yes, logging food will keep you in check.
You probably didn't realize it, but you definitely started eating more. I don't think your metabolism knew you turned 30 and just stopped working! that would be funny tho :p
Counting calories is easy, frustrating, but easy! You will get the hang of it! It will take time to get back to 110, but it will be worth it!
Exercising will help a lot! Strength training in addition to cardio!
    Best of luck

Good logging will also provide your physician information in the event that something has changed -- be it your thyroid or something else acting up.

What else in your life has changed?

Your metabolism is probably just fine... get a food scale like the others said. Almost certainly, you ate more and moved less.

Getting the mental game down is the big challenge. I would suggest stop worrying so much what others think about you, as you seem very invested in their opinion.

Is most of the gain in the last 8 months or so?... are you sure you're not pregnant?

If you haven't changed your eating habits in the last 18 months I would assume time has caught up with you.

Log your food and be honest - measure it, weigh it, eat it.

pretty simple, if you are really curious do one day with your "normal" eating and see just how many calories you really are consuming. It is really eye opening to see what you have and have not been eating.

Are you sure there isn't a medical issue... 50 lbs in 18 months sounds extreme. I gained 50 pounds in 8 years.

Definitely. I had been lying to myself for a very long time. Logging and weighing everything has stopped that! The weight's coming off.

    Good luck!

No, I'm not sure there's no medical issue.....all I can rule out so far is PCOS, pregnancy, and thyroid issues. I'm sorry if my initial post seemed self-absorbed to some.....but having overnight lost my slim self, I'm constantly confronted by the difference in how others view me. It's done a huge whammy on my self-esteem. I don't get looked at hardly at all anymore, really.

Well, that said, first thing is a thorough physical, including bloodwork. It you are fine physically, which I am sure you are, in addition to what all of the others have said above about weighing food and all of that, I highly suggest that you begin an exercise program. It will help tremendously both physically and emotionally. Good luck!
