Would you be offended to be diagnosed with a "Ghetto Booty"

JACKSON, Tenn. - A Tennessee woman is filing a complaint after she said her doctor used an offensive term while giving her a diagnosis.

Terry Ragland went to a doctor looking for treatment for her severe lower back pain.

Ragland said she was seen by a nurse, then the doctor, who sent her to get an X-ray.

When he came back into the exam room, Ragland said the doctor gave her a diagnosis not seen in any medical book.

"He said, 'I know what the problem is. It's ghetto booty,' and I said, 'Ghetto what?' He said, 'Ghetto booty,'" Ragland said. "He said, 'There's no cure for it, but I could give you something if you're having pain.'"

Ragland said she reported the incident to the office manager, who apologized.

A few weeks later, the doctor sent a letter of apology, saying he was trying to tell her that she had lumbar lordosis, a curve in her spine that makes the buttocks protrude more.

There is no cure.

The insult was that he didn't feel she had the intelligence to understand the medical term for her condition. Either way he's an asshat.

Regardless of people understanding what the term "ghetto booty" is, I don't think it's right for a Doctor to use it to explain a condition to a patient.

Also I was under the impression that you can fix hyperlordosis to some degree? Cause if you can't then I sure am wasting my time!

Maybe doc should have said she has a Brazilian booty, or a J Lo booty. I think the word ghetto is what got her.

Yeah, mostly because I don't like the term, "ghetto" when it's used like that.

I wouldn't be offended, but I don't believe that doctors should be using slang when making diagnosis.

My brother went to the ER when he woke with Bell's Palsy (thought he was having a stroke) ... the doctor walked into the room and said "hey droopy!!" ... it was funny AFTER the diagnosis, but at the time, it was in really bad taste!

OK what is a coon booty? Please tell me you mean racoon and not the derogatory term for "us".
  • Without pics of her butt, this is useless to decide.

Maybe not the most professional way ever to diagnose, but I'd have cracked up and not been at all offended. She's going to have a hard time proving any real damage.

it's a term for some people from south LA. it's NOT what it sounds like if you'd never heard it. It's just a term.

Some people would respond well to a doctor who is more light-hearted and makes jokes; some people do not appreciate such familiarity. The doctor made a wrong judgment as to which type of person his patient was. It's better to play it safe and be strictly professional, since there are so many sue-happy morons in this world. A simple apology is all that should have been warranted here.

To the original question...I've been told plenty of times that I have "ghetto booty" by non-medical people. And I like to joke. So no, I wouldn't be offended.

I wouldn't be offended. The problem with todays society is everyone wants to be "politically correct."

Told I have one by as layperson? Not offensive.

Diagnosed by a medical professional? Offensive. I expect medical professionals to use medical terminology.

I was offended when a medical professional told me my TMJ was "just the way God made me." Not offended enough to complain, but offended enough to seek medical help elsewhere. As it turns out, I wasn't "made that way" by anyone. I needed my bite guard adjusted, which the first doctor failed to do.
