Me, cabin, beach and scale???

I'm heading out on holidays very soon, nothing extravagant, just the cabin. I am seriously thinking about packing the scale with me so that i can keep track, stay motivated and not let myself slide down that slippery slope of holiday gain. As much as part of me thinks this is a great idea another part of me thinks i may be taking this a wee bit too far??
I don't know what does everyone else think? Yay or Nay to bringing my scale on vacation?

If you keep track of your calories, why would you need a scale?0
-
Nay.
Big fat (no pun intended) nay.0 -
True, i must admitt i've become a little bit obsessed with watching my actual weight.0
-
If you like reading, bring a book. If you like weighing yourself, bring a scale.0

it's a VACATION......lighten up, have a good time and watch the calorie intake.....0

Well, this is a good way to get away from that unhealthy process.
If you set MFP to lose 0 lbs a week while you're gone on vacation, and eat at that, you won't gain any weight. If you eat over that by 500 everyday for a week, you'll gain 1 lb. I wouldn't stress too much over it.0 -
Ok so i guess i forgot to mention that this is a 2 week vacation and i guess what i am afraid of is that i'll start out strong and then before i know BAM 5lbs gain at the end of 2 weeks0

Well you'd have to eat 1,250 calories over maintenance every day for 14 days to actually gain 5lbs. The scale might say 5lb from water weight and extra waste stored from eating more. But it would be really hard to gain 5lb of fat in 2 weeks if you're being careful. I'm sure you'll be swimming and walking too.0 -
Wow...5 lbs. would be awesome in 2 weeks! I "gained" 11 on my 1 week vacay last month and it is JUST NOW gone! Do what is best for you to keep you on track! :drinker:0
-
And even that 5 pounds will probably be mostly water weight and be gone within a week...You are very close to obsessing if you want to take a scale on vacation.....0

The rational part of me gets what you're saying and agrees with you...the paranoid i don't wanna gain any weight back and have to re-lose the same friggin weight again in addition to the weight i still have to lose is slightly less sure of your theories :happy:0

Lol it kinda sounds like going on vacation may actually be more stressful than just staying home!
There will always be more time to lose weight this year, but not a whole lot of vacations.0 -
Food scale, maybe. Bodyweight scale, no.0
-
I agree w/the majority. Just keep track of calories. And hey, this way, you can be even more excited when you get back.0
-
LOL i'm "stressing" over this now, but once i've made up my mind i'll let all the what if's go0

I love weighing myself. Up down up down.. it's fun. But it doesn't have anything to do with my actually losing weight or not - that depends on what I eat and how much I exercise. Since you seem to be taking the scale a little too seriously, I'd go with not bringing the scale. Enjoy yourself on your vacation. If you're concerned about gaining weight, play actively and eat moderately. Good luck!0 -
It's vacation. Take a vacation
You probably don't need to take it to the extent I did though. I just got back and I went completely off the wagon and when I weighed this morning I was up 12 pounds over a 10 day vacation. I am pretty sure half to three quarters of that will be gone within a week.0 -
ohhhhh never thought of it that way! good point0
-
Drink lots of water and get a good fiber intake... keeps yourself running smoothly in new locations. I watch what I eat when on vacation, but I eat what I want.0
-
no way enjoy yourself0

lol! Im going down to the cabin next week for a family vacay and im seriously considering taking my food scale with me. I think it would make me look a bit obsessive to my cousins. :laugh:0

It's your vacation - take along the things that make you happy - and that can include your scale. I often pack healthy food while out of town so that I can treat myself to one meal out per day. This just helps me stay on track with my eating and not to be stressing the entire time about calories.
While we were out of town for a week, I pledged to stay very tight on my calories, all the while picking one meal a day to really enjoy. We also swam, ran several miles a few days that week and in the extra time, I worked out at the hotel in the exercise room. I was very successful in that I only gained a 1/2 pound on the trip and that was easy to lose once I was back home.
Last fall I went on vacation and came home weighing 10 pounds more, so it was very important to me on my last vacation to watch myself closely as to not sabatoge my healthier lifestyle.
I am also a person who weighs daily. I don't beat myself up over small weight gains because I understand how having higher sodium days affect water retention and coincidentally I will see those gains on the scale. The scale just helps me keep everything in check. So I say "take it if you want it and can fit it in your car with you".0 -
No scale on vacation! That is a lot obsessed. Have fun and get back to it when you return.0
-
Leave the scale at home. Eating away from home you are likely to gain water weight and you'll drive yourself crazy weighing yourself every day. When you get home, get back on track immediately, drink lots of water and DO NOT WEIGH YOURSELF for at least 3-4 days! Give your body time to shed the water weight before you jump back on.
We have to get away from thinking the scale is our only measure of success!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!0 -
Do you really want to drag your scale with you on vacation? A more portable option would be measuring tape. You can track your waistline and worry about the scale when you get back. Chances are if you are more active on vacation than you are at home you won't gain too much weight if you cheat on your diet.0

My personal recommendation:
1. Leave scale at home; use space saved in bags to pack smutty romance novel
2. Research low-cal drink options (I like rum and diet cola)
3. When you feel nervous about not having a scale, make yourself a drink.
4. Enter drink in your tracker.
5. Drink it (preferably while reading smutty book).
6. Still nervous? Repeat steps 3-5 as necessary.
ETA: 7. Enjoy vacation!!!!!0 -
Lots to definately think about...i really appreciate everyone's opinion and please know i am not as crazy as i may sound to some of you...just tired of going up and down on the scale :happy:0

We've just come back from a 10 day holiday in Phuket...no scales! I'm only a couple of months into MFP but, by taking what I've learnt about portions and high calorie foods I not only had a great time but, lost 1kg. Having said that we ate lots of yummy Thai food which meant heaps of carbs (rice, noodles etc). We walked long beach walks everyday and I even managed to run a few times.
So I guess what I'm saying is, leave the scales at home, enjoy your holiday and test what you have learnt!0 -
