Planning an off day

I'm not encouraging or promoting days to have blow outs just for the sake of it but I wanted to know something and see if anyone else does this too.

One day in the week, when I have my weigh in. That day for me is usually a day for me to have whatever I want but not through out the entire day.

For example:
Monday comming, I will weigh myself in the morning carry on with my diet as I normally do. I allow myself to have something that is not exactly healthy but I allow it even if it goes slightly over my calorie intake (I have a tub of Ben and Jerry's cookie dough waiting for me in the freezer ). Then back to normal the following week.

Is this ok to do or does it affect us badly?

  • i think its fine as long as you dont eat the entire tub of ice cream. since MFP has already calculated a 500 calorie deficit into our daily calories if you go into that you're probably still having some sort of deficit like 200 or 300 instead of 500.

just remember to not eat that whole tub of ice cream! XD

my day off is tomorrow. i eat whatever i want, if i want it, but not like a glutton. i don't feel bad for having carrot cake and ice cream. i work hard 6 days a week, watching and counting and exercising. one day off will not kill me. i'm not even logging my food tomorrow. i think i have enough self control after doing this everday. i'm mindful, but not scared to enjoy something yummy.

i think it's good to have an "off" but controlled day. well for me it is. :)

LMAO!!! Wow and to think I've been doing that the whole time!

I actually calculated how many calories are in the entire tub! bloody over 1200!

Need to learn to be satisfied with a bit I guess :)
  • I have a cheat meal every week! I know food is not a reward but I still want to be able to enjoy myself in social settings when everyone around me is eating burgers and having coctails. :-)

I am willing to have a slower progress in weight loss in order to eat foods that I know I will always want to eat. If we deny ourselves these treats, we won't learn to incorporate them into an overall healthy diet, and we'll be more prone to regaining weight. Just my 2 cents.

Some people are of a personality type that means they cannot indulge even one bit and when they reach goal weight they still don't go back to eating the sweets or fried foods or whatever "fattening" food. They can't succeed, otherwise, but I think that type of person is in the minority. There's nothing wrong with either approach.

Oh I see, lol I was beginning to think I was the only one.

Sometimes I would have just about anything in any amount on my weigh in days and I still have a loss the following week but I'm not sure if my body may back fire on me.

    wow thats alot! :noway:

maybe just eat a third of the tub then! XD
  • I've noticed that I still have what I want, I just balance out the rest of my day around it, and if I'm over, I find a way to do some exercise where I can. I've been under every day since I started - I'm not going to worry about being over ONE day here and there, as long as it's not "a whole Papa John's Large Supreme Pizza" kind of over. I think that's healthy - you deny things too long and you're more likely to binge.

I have had a few and planning a big one!

My birthday is in a few weeks and we are going out for rib night! I plan to eat lots, dessert too maybe even a few maragaritas. I figure I have worked hard and lost over 10lbs since I started with calories counting, I have 17lbs to go and months to do it in so I will have a great birthday with great food and then get back on track the next day.

I say if you can do it and still stay on track go for it. BUT if it turns into I'll just eat this and work it off tomorrow and tomorrow never comes then there is issues. That was me in May :(

It's actually a good thing to have a day where you bump up your calories every week or so. It keeps your metabolism from getting too used to your routine and slowing up again. I try to vary my day too, just to keep everything in my body on its toes.

So it's fine to have an off day that isn't your weigh in day?

As I understand it from Bob AND Jillian and some other articles I've read, it's actually encouraged to have a day where you bump your calories up to keep your metabolism on its toes so to speak. You probably could always do it on your weigh-in day...I try to vary mine, but a lot of times it ends up being Sunday because of coffee hour at church. LOL.
