The longest plateau?

What is the longest you have been at your plateau for?

For me 8 stone has been an issue for years. I'll diet, cut down, exercise, etc and not budge until I give up. Sometimes I last a whole month at 8 stone before I give up and go back to old habits.

For my partner, 15 stone was an issue for over a month. He took up cycling and switched from full fat coke to Coke Zero and cut sweets and didn't shed a pound. Until last week when he seems to have lost half a stone out of the blue!

A colleague also can't get past 13 stone and has been hitting the gym for weeks.

Some words of encouragement please. Some people tell me body wants to be 8 stone and its what I should be. But I'm still overweight. My Doctor also nags me about my weight due to my hip condition so I want to beat this!

8 stone is 112 lbs and 6.5 stone is 91 lbs. Unless you are extremely short I doubt that 91 lbs is remotely close to healthy and I'd get a new doctor if he finds you too heavy at 112 lbs!

    I'm 4 ft 8 so don't worry I actually am really short!

The last time I went to the hospital was 7 stone and very proud of myself. I was excited to see if he'd comment. But, he said just as I left:

" Your looking great, by the way. Just try not to put any more on " ....

    Ruined my day. lol

Seriously, I would move away from trying to lose the last few pounds, and would work on building up muscle. Start Lifting and Lifting Heavy. This will tone up a lot of the areas and make you appear at what you want to be at.

Due to the hip problem ( perthes ) I find gym sessions of any kind really too much. Even just weights. I work as a maid and that's at least 5 full hours of vigorous cleaning. I took the job purely for the fact that I could stay active and earn money a the same time.

I tried gym on top of it and couldn't get out of bed due to the pain. I'm getting a hip replacement at some point in my 30s, so trying to limit damage. After consulting my Doctor, my job is fine for me. Just no extra strain and lots of rest after work.

Thank you so much for your advice, however. I don't want to seem like I'm completely rejecting it, it makes a lot of sense. It would improve my muscles and therefore my metabolism.

My longest plateau was about 6 weeks into using MFP and it lasted for 3 weeks with no loss at all. I upped my calories to the exact (or close to exact) recommended amount and was more careful with sugar and sodium, and my plateau "broke".

yes, I agree, try weight training it will tighten up everything and make your body leaner and help burn fat as well. That is probably what the body needs seeing as you are so close to your weight....

Weight training doesn't have to be vigorous, take it slow and build up. If you can spend hours a day cleaning because cleaning for a living is no joke, then your body should be able to handle some weights. Start small and work your way up.

Great. I've been allotted 1200 and also burn around 700 a day. However, Ive been stupidly leaving like 800 calories a day because its a bit of a rush to cope on so few calories. ( ex Anorexic ) But I've been reading all night and have seen many people say you need to eat as much as your guided to and you will lose more steadily.

So I think starting tomorrow I will fulfil my calorie recommendation wherever possible.

Miqisha, thank you. I may pop into the gym at work. It will save time to just go downstairs after work and get it done before I go home. So thats a plus. And its only £30 a year staff discount!

I really should do it. ( and also thank you to the previous poster to suggest weights )

I broke a 9-month plateau last month, but the weight has been slow to come off since. I'm lucky to lose 1/2 lb a week.

I don't know how you all dealt with it. Im going crazy here since last Saturday. Weighed myself when I came home. Still 8 stone. Thats only 5 days but my mood is growing worse and worse.

I feel really immature now moaning after only 5 days. But my diet and lifestyle have improved so much and I don't know why its happening! Always 8 stone. I hate 8 stone. 8 stone can suck it.

    /Rant.

A month at your stage of weight loss is not a plateau. The last few pounds take forever. I lost 1-2 pounds a week for six months and have crawled since. However, that's okay, because I'm comfortable with where I am and am just moving into permanent maintenance and new habits. You are really right to be careful though, because at that height, small weight gains really show up. It's all proportional to overall size.

The National Institute of Health's best models for weight loss all show marked slowing as you get closer to goal. What has the biggest effect on how you look, however, is just exercise. It also helps you keep it off.

I've been stuck here since February. I think maybe I'm very, very slowly putting on muscle, and that increased my weight by 3 pounds since last February. My weight dropped to around 128 pounds for a couple of weeks, as my all time low, but I've been inching back up since then.

I'd really like to get down to my goal, even if it is just for a couple of days. That would be nice.
