The trainers at our gym say air-conditioning can slow down metabolism. Really? I mean I've heard everything, but is this real?

Yes, based on chemical response from a neurological and kinetic energy chain, heat will cause a rise in your heart rate and body temperature. This is why so many weight lifting products claim to create a thermogenic burn. It's important to work out in a normal conditioned atmosphere are slightly warm, because it will help your heart rate reach maximum effeciency levels in order for your workout to have a lasting effect. Hope my input was helpful.0

Even if this was accurate I'd say the effect would be ridiculously minimal.
OP, sounds like a load of tot. Just focus on your workout.0 -

the what now?! is that their excuse for no air con at the gym?0 -
What a load of bs lol I'd get a new personal trainer.0

So anybody with heart or breathing problems be excluded from continuing their life enhancing exercise programmes during the hot weather because a few ' nuts' want to burn an extra few calories by being hot. Health & safety issue here methinks if the air con is not on!!!0

Exactly!
I have mild asthma, so while people can think I'm a loser who can't max out at cardio in the absence of a sufficiently cooled environment, I have my reasons for it.
While I don't need an a/c, I don't understand the need to mislead people so badly! (Couldn't pay the electricity bill???)
Well there are a lot of myths I hear at this gym, like :
1. If you don't reach your target heart rate you won't lose weight.
2. Ginger and lemon juice can be used as a fat-burning juice.
3. Eat every two hours. **I can't. I'd get fired for so many breaks :P
4. During recovery, (in circuit training which is what we do everyday) it is imperative you don't increase the resistance on the machine (for legs/triceps/whatever) because you'd be putting on muscle. ****This one had me scratching my head.
5. I(as in random female) can't squat with 5 lbs in each hand, Im supposed to squat with 2 lbs instead. This is ahem! strength training.
happy reading!0 -
Always take "gym nutritionists" with a grain of salt.
Even if some of these things could be true, it would be so extremely minimal you wouldn't even notice.
Everyone should stay away from anything claiming to "boost metabolism", it's just a way to get desperate people to buy products.0 -
No. Air conditioning is just making the space cold.
If anything you burn more energy to keep your body warm when it's cold, surely? I imagine the effect would be minimal as I doubt we're talking a room at body temperature vs frozen tundra.
Sounds like this person is talking out of their butt. One PT told me never to drink cold water or else my food would stick to my insides and give me cancer. Seriously... There was no telling this person that once it's inside your body for a minute or two it's pretty much at body temperature. I asked for a different trainer.0 -
