Running Shoes: which ones are right for you

I recently started running again and have an older pair of shoes I wore to work (on my feet). They seemed great when I bought them, however when I started running I realized I'm running more on the inside of my foot. My arches and shins are KILLING me after a run for the next couple of days. Any ideas of what shoes I should be wearing or if I just need insoles?
Also, I am not a runner. I ran maybe 2-3 days for 40 mins on a treadmill this winter and thats about it. I am now trying to run outside.

Your best bet is to visit a running specialty store and have them analyze your gait, I'm lucky enough to wear a neutral/cushioning shoe but you may need something completely different.
Another factor to so consider is that different brands use different lasts so brand x may have a narrower heel and bigger toe box than brand y.
Really good fit is imperative, take your time and try on different makes etc - your shoes should not need to be "broken in", they should feel great the first time you put them on.0 -
Thanks so much for the input! That is what I was thinking I would have to do. Which to me is worth it if I don't have that pain. I want to like to run so badly, and shoes not fitting properly is a problem.
Thanks again!0 -
Just to expand a bit. Different shoes within the same brand use different lasts. Also keep in mind that the fit can change when a shoe receives an update. So yes, go to a running shoe store and try on some shoes.0
