NROLFW step up question

Hi, for anyone who's done NROLFW, one of the exercises in Stage One is the stepup. It's one of the most challenging exercises for me so far aside from the pushups. I was wondering whether it would be ok to practice stepups daily with no weight to try to improve my form and success with the exercise. Yesterday I tried them with weights on a higher step than I'd used so far (not entirely sure how high, but maybe 16 inches) and I fell. I've got a long way to go. Is practicing the stepup consistently going to help or hurt me? If it will hurt, any other exercises to try?
Just some info about me, I'm 5'9", 230, total n00b to weights.

Just to add - when I fell, I was obviously trying to do too much too quickly, and I'm fine. I'm going to move back down to a 10 to 12 inch step and light weights. I just still struggle with the movement.0
