Does tanning burn calories?

I've noticed that every time I sun tan I get really hungry during/afterwards. I know this sounds stupid but does lying in the sun burn calories or something? Or is it a fake hunger?

I would have to guess that you are actually thirsty. Sometimes your body makes you think you are hungry but in reality you are thirsty. Being that you are in the sun, I'm guessing this is what it is. You needing some water to hydrate0

She hit the nail on the head, you lost water weight by sweating...you didn't burn any calories.0 -
This link might provide a bit more of information.

Thank you for verifying, I wasn't 100% sure.0 -
Yup, 'fraid to say it's probably dehydration and not hunger. You're not using your muscles and the energy expenditure of the chemical processes of tanning aren't significant.
Keep hydrated throughout....
PS Tanning is bad for you! It's damaging your skin! You may end up skinny from dieting, but you'll look like a saddle bag with eyes! Fake it if you want to be brown. Safer and healthier.0 -
To be honest even fair skin is sexy I love woman with a lighter skin tone0

I agree I have a 70yr old aunt who has been a sun worshipper her whole life and for as long as i can remember she's resembled a leather sofa not a good look lol. As for burning cals you are probably burning no more than you lying in bed.0 -
Thanks, I thought it might have been thirst but the gnawing in my stomach was so strong it was hard to believe water could fix it haha.
And I know tanning is bad, I live in Australia where skin cancer is one of the most prevalent diseases and the sun is strongest. I don't tan very often and when I do I use sunscreen and oil with an SPF rating. I can't be bothered giving my life story as a further response but I am aware of the effects of sun damage to the skin. Thanks anyway.0 -
Okay here is a question. I did Pilates in the sun, would that burn anymore calories then just doing Pilates in a room?0

It's not bad to team s little bit. Excessively yes but sheesh.0

No.
You got hot and then you perspired and then you got thirst and then you mistook it for hunger.0 -

LMAO. It does something but it probably has little to do with your daily calorie needs. Drink some water and you'll be fine. Don't go totally Jersey Shore on us M'Kay?0 -

I'd go with your gut instinct on this one....0 -
Yup it's dehydration. I lost and entire 'pound' while sunbathing for 1 hour and a half, then I was back to my original weight by the end of the day. Does tanning burn calories? Your body burns calories all the time.0

Dammit! This is why I hate zombie threads.
This guy was a good friend of mine and I was all excited thinking he had come back!!!

technically, you burn calories just breathing and what not. I burn roughly 1800 per day just being alive. but more to the point i'm sure you're driving at...no...you're not burning any more calories than if you were laying in bed.0

Agreed! Why tan?? It is not prettier to be crispy like a turkey...and you could get skin cancer!
I though tanning went out in the 70s???0 -
Tanning per se, does not burn calore but an elevation in body temperature does increase your BMR. For instance, you are sick with a high fever, your body will burn more calories. http://www.livestrong.com/article/321747-how-many-calories-does-a-fever-burn/0

Just a note on tanning... Our generation has a Vit D deficiency because we keep people/kids indoors and out of the sun, and if they are in the sun; they are lathered in sunblock. The sun is our MAJOR contributor of Vit D. Sooo... don't go crazy and stay in the sun all day long. But don't be so paranoid about skin cancer that you can't spend 30 min. a day in the sunshine soaking up that Vit D!
Enjoy! :glasses: (Love me some sunshine!)0 -

I agree. I think it is good to get a couple hours ( 1 -3 ) in the sun every day that you can. It will not age you. I think you have problems when you are spending more than that in the sun. My family lives in South Carolina and it has not aged my mom or dad or siblings.0 -
Apparently people know more about diets than biophysics. Yes, your body expends calories keeping your body temp in check while laying in the sun. Just like you burn calories to keep core temp up in cold weather. Is the burn much in the sun? Probably not but it IS more that laying in a bed.0
