If shrimp weren't so expensive they would be on my weekly diet in mass quantity. I absolutely love the filling feeling with so few calories. chopped up in a salad or even stand alone with a fork dip of cocktail sauce.

Me too. I do buy shrimp (the frozen ones), and just use it as one of my small rewards (because of the cost). I usually just put it frozen into a pan on the stove, cook slowly and then eat it (with vegetables), without any sauce - it is so darned good. And so good for you too - except the sodium count, but I am always low on my sodium anyways, so don't worry about it too much.
  • well..I buy Krogers frozen shrimp the 26 count size which is a nice medium size. I pay 5.99 for a lb of them and it gets my hubby and I, 2 meals so is that expensive? I am a budget shopper so if I can have a serving of protein for 1.50 per person I think that is very reasonable. I make shrimp tacos, shrimp pasta, grill them and top a huge green salad with/veggies or roll them into enchiladas. yummy
  • Our walmart has the 41-60 per lb. shrimp for $5 and they are a pretty decent size. Not too pricey depending on how you are cooking them. If you do something like shrimp spaghetti then one package works well. However, I live in Louisiana (seafood capital of the world LOL) so it may be more expensive where you are. Anyways ... That's definitely a great reward .. Shrimp are my absolute favorite seafood :)

Homeland has the pre-cooked frozen shrimp for $6.99 right now (in Oklahoma anyway).

    Hello All,

This is my first post in the 15 days I have been with MFP! I am in my third week of Phase 1 P90X and have lost 10 LBS. I found a tasty meal using the "Birdseye Asian Stir Fry". 1 Cup cooked (and thats a lot) = 1.5 gs of fat, 10 gs of carbs, and 2gs of protein. I then add 3 oz. of "Fry's" peeled tail on cooked shimp (thawed ) in the last few mins of heating. 3 oz. is about 10 shimp (huge amount) = 1 g of fat, 0 carbs, and 18 gs of protein. Ends up being 150 calories for the over filling meal and tastes outstanding!....Hope this helps and be safe.

Go to the warehouse type stores... Costco, Sams, BJ's. At my BJ's I get a 2 pound bag of frozen cooked medium shrimp for $9.99. Figure 7-10 meals per bag, add rice and vegies or salad.... comes out to 2-3 bucks a meal, a very filling meal at that. I have found that if I put them in water on the stove until thawed they don't lose the plumpness and stay tender instead of chewy and rubbery thawed in the microwave. I also get the frozen talapia and salmon individually wrapped for reasonable prices. I love the Perdue chicken breasts that are packaged 2 per pack! I recently bought some chicken breasts on sale at another store and had to spend nearly an hour cleaning the fat and goop off them before I could freeze them. Came out to nearly 1.5 pounds of gunk between the 14 breasts I got. So much for being on sale.

I have eaten this also. the only thing i find is that I dont stay full very long when I eat it. Of course any asian food I eat doesnt keep me full for long. Shrimp are great though I am so happy to live in louisiana where seafood is so abundant. I dont like the recent price increases on the fresh stuff though. I like to sautee some and put them with barilla multigrain penne pasta and alfredo sauce.... lots of protien and fiber. The fat is a little high but it is a good treat every now and then.

That sounds like a delicious meal.... I will have to try that. I am always afraid of cooking shrimp in a stir fry because I worry about not cooking it enough, then I end up overcooking it and it tastes awful! Do you use frozen shrimp or do you have it already thawed out before throwing the shrimp in with the stir fry?

Even when they are frozen and I throw them in the stir fry.. they take 10 mins at the most to cook(60 count shrimp)usually between 6-8mins). I usually try to cook them on the side and add them in at the end of the stir fry just so that the flavor gets cooked in that way I dont over cook them.

The shimp I spoke of is already cooked and peeled, just thaw in cold water and add to the stir fry in the last 5 mins of cooking...You'll love it! : )
