Hi, I have decided to wear my HRM for a day to see what it says i am burning off calorie wise. I'm not losing weight and am on 1200 cals and doing exercise, so thought i would see what my body actual needs to maintain. I am at work and not doing anything different than i would on a normal day, I have burned off 881 calories, have looked at what i have eaten and only consumed 689 so far !!! Will see what it all comes out at at the end of the day. Anyone else done this ? Might all be a load of rubbish, but will try anything !!!

  • I am wanting to try this as well. Curious to know exactly how many cals I do burn a day. Will be looking forward to your results.
  • HRMs are not made to accurately calculate your daily requirements. they can only be used when you are exercising. i think there was someone here that posted the explanation for why - and it has to do with needing to be in a certain percentage of your vo2max usage.

anyway, i really wouldn't use your hrm for everyday needs. it's going to WAY overshoot your calorie requirement.
  • Well I have got home from work and so far have burned 1403 calories. Will leave it on rest of day and see what happens, will post results later. It was only to see if I was using up as many as I thought I had.

To quote one poster on here, all you're doing wearing your HRM all day is wearing down the batteries. The figure you end up with will be completely meaningless; heart rate monitors have no accuracy at predicting daily calorie allowances and may only be used to produce an estimate of calorie burn during exercise. Not a measurement, an estimate.
  • here's the topic with that post you quoted: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/114925-self-bs-and-counting-calories

azdak briefly touches on this topic.
  • Well have finished wearing it and I used up 1995, 280 of which were burnt through exercise. So it worked out to me that to maintain I would need to use approximate 1750 to maintain, and my profile stated I would need 1640' so not a bad guess to me. It was only something that I was curious about and wasn't taking it too seriously, it just showed to me I was on the right track anyway.
