Working moms with kids in evening activities.

We are starting the evening activity train with our 4 year old. He has karate once a week from 6-7. Typically we pick him up from daycare between 4:30 and 5:00 with about 45 min to spare before needing to be at class with about a 15 min drive there. This does not allow us time to stop home. He needs to eat dinner between pick-up and class start otherwise he is starving and crabby by the time we get home. Any ideas for easy on the go meals for him? We've been packing a sandwich and he doesn't mind it but I worry that it will get old after a while! We've done fast food a couple of times (usually when my husband does pick up because he doesn't plan ahead!) but I don't want that to become a habit.

Maybe you can do sandwiches or wraps and use cookie cutters to do some fun shapes? Or you can make your own lunchable style meal for him with some crackers, cheese, meat, and some fruit or apple sauce.

Wraps are a great idea along with sandwiches. Change up the fillings now and again so you aren't eating the same things all the time. Make a big salad and have in containers to eat along the way. Slices meats, sliced cheese and cut up veggies and some crackers and dip are a great on the go meal. You could also do homemade burritos. Put some cooked rice, black beans, and some cheese into a tortilla and roll up. You don't have to eat this one hot either which is great.

There are a ton of ideas on pintrest I started pinning some for myself too with our busy lifestyle. I plan on buying bento boxes which will be easy to take on the go.

What if you do snacks before class and dinner after? That would help keep the crabbiness at bay but also allow some variety. You could do cheese strings, cut fruit, crackers, yogurt... it opens up the possibilities a lot.

When my kids were that age, they were big fans of the "snack dinner" - portion controlled servings of cheese or meat with crackers and some fruit or carrot sticks, etc. You don't want anything all that heavy before karate, so even just a cheese stick a fruit or veg would probably get him through class. No matter how grumpy my kids are, they always perk up for class and get distracted! (They've been doing karate for years now. It is awesome.)

We sometimes do quesadillas-cheese, chicken, or black bean. Other options are hard boiled eggs, cheese and crackers.

I will admit I will get McDonalds are some of those nights..
  • Thanks for all the ideas! I think wraps might be a good option. It is hard because I don't want to give him anything heavy but by the time we get home it's practically time for bath/bed and I don't want him eating so close to bedtime. We tried a big snack before and a big snack after but I felt like he wasn't getting a rounded "meal."
It just might be my excuse to get some Bento Boxes!!

I don't know how you moms of more than one do it!
