Straight edge is a subculture and subgenre of hardcore punk whose adherents refrain from using alcohol, tobacco, and other recreational drugs. It was a direct reaction to the sexual revolution, hedonism, and excess associated with punk rock. For some, this extends to not engaging in promiscuous sex, following a vegetarian or vegan diet, and not using caffeine or prescription drugs. The term was adopted from the song "Straight Edge" by the 1980s hardcore punk band Minor Threat.

I thought maybe this was going to be a thread about WWE wrestling or something. I fell like I got robbed.0 -
I have not heard the phrase "Straight Edge" since about 1994. Nice to see there are still holdouts out there. [raises glass of wine to toast]0

do all straight edgers loiter outside of hot topic at the town mall with sharpie X's across their hands? at least that's what they did in my neck of the woods0

Never!0

Hmmm I've never considered myself "Straight Edge" but I hit most of the qualifications.
I was punk before it was a fashion statement.
I no longer drink nor do drugs.
I only engage in promiscuous sex with my wife
Not willing to give up caffeine nor prescription drugs... (Hey I'm over 50.... stuff hurts!!)
Vegan??? Not gonna happen.0 -
No way. I don't drink or smoke or do drugs, I am not about to give up sex and red meat too. Going to listen to some Minor Threat now.0

That and congregate at punk rock shows waiting for some poor kid to light a joint so they can all jump him and kick the crap out of him...0 -
every person that declared themselves straight edge to me always told me why im a bad person and then attempted to initiate a fight about it.0

This still exists?
My god, I remember when being straight edge was all the rage...in middle school.
I dunno. I just refrain from tobacco 'cuz I've seen the effects first hand from family. I avoid recreational drugs because I don't want to go through the pains of addiction or get caught doing something illegal. I avoid alcohol except the odd beer or cocktail 'cuz I don't like the effects of excessive alcohol on my body and mindset. I avoided 'promiscuous' sex with multiple partners because I wasn't into it, and now I'm married anyway so whatevs.
I'm not vegan/vegetarian because I like meat. I take some prescription pills 'cuz they work when I need them (obviously). Coffee rocks.
Does that make me straight edge? Hell no.0 -
Ah hell I was expecting something different. No promiscuity?! I was just thinking about hitting a bar and grabbing the first guy that walked in, getting a drink and some big beef burgers with him, then taking him back to a hotel room to log. Yes I said LOG (our food and drink). Get your mind out of the gutter LOL. Happy Friday everyone!0

I remember Straight Edgers being on Montell Williams or some similar show back in the 90s, and while their views were the same as yours, they were also going aroung beating the crap out of people that they deemed bad (alcoholics, drug addicts).
So, good for you.0 -
:noway:
I love Weed...
That is all. \m/0 -
I never heard all of this.
When I was in high school, among my circle of friends, straight edge only meant that the person would hang around with "users", but did not drink or use drugs, so people knew not to offer (or unintentionally pressure) that person into using. If someone offered them stuff, and they said no, another friend would say, "He's straight edge". They didn't have any special symbols or things they did. They still had sex and ate whatever they wanted, and there was no religious element or violence or judgement. Perhaps we used the word wrong, but it worked really well for us all to be friends and hang out and not have anyone being pressured. Everyone made their own choices and was respected for that. And you definitely wouldn't know by looking at them.0 -
Yup, in wisconsin here there is a huge straight edge community....then there is what we call a "hate edge" community. The straight edgers are respectful of peoples decisions and don't force their opinions on anyone. The hate edgers will beat the tar out of you if you disagree with their viewpoints or drink or smoke around them. Watch "Boston Beatdown" to see more on the straight edge lifestyle and the extremes some people go to0
