Any way of determining speed of metabolism?

Hello,

I'm very eager to know my metabolism speed. Is there any way to determine the rate using some calculations and measurements?
I know I became overweight because I used to eat a lot (averaging 4000 calories intake per day at an age of 12-15), but I'm not sure if a slow metabolism was the main factor in causing me to become overweight.

    There are online calculators, but if you want it tested, a dietician can usually do it. You sit quietly and breathe into a machine for 10 minutes of so. It'll give you your Resting Metabolic Rate.

    4000 calories is the likely culprit here. Lets be for real for a minute. I had a job where I was burning that many calories on my work days. Problem is the other two days I ate the same number of calories. So, that put me in at least a 200 calorie a day surplus on average even on days where I would burn that many calories. So, even with a high burn rate I was gaining.

    If you want an accurate assessment without having to experiment much I would do the thing with the machine that measures your RMR. If you are willing to log your calories and your exercise for a month or so you can get a pretty good idea from that what your RMR is from what the scale does.

    I started at around 220 pounds on May 1st 2013. I've been living on a 1300-1400 calorie diet since then (I've been told it's low but I find it reasonable with 5-7 cheat days in total).
    I'm a 5'9 19yo male. I weigh a bit more than 180 pounds as of today. that's roughly 40 pounds lost in 69 days.
    My BMR is between 1900-2100. Assuming it's a bit more (2300-2500), then I should be losing 2-3 pounds per week, but in reality I've lost 40 pounds in 10 weeks, that's 4 pounds per week. So what's happening here?

    That is really low, minimum intake for a male is 1800 calories.

    Shirt size: 16 --> 14
    Pants size: 38 --> 31-32
    Tone biceps, triceps, and shoulders.

    All by eating staying around 1300 calorie intake.

    In my opinion, It's safe to go that low in the beginning when you have a lot to lose. I'm approaching my goal weight so I'm working on increasing my intake now.
