Yoyo dieting, how to break the cycle?

I'm a life long yoyo dieter. In the last year and a half I lost 16kg (healthy eating and exercise), then over 6 months I put 6 kilos back on (not so much exercise and not so much healthy eating).

How do you motivate yourself everyday to keep to a healthy lifestyle plan. I desperately need to get myself focused and back on track. My weight is affecting my happiness and how I see myself. I need to lose about 20kg in total and that seems so far away. :frown:

If you look at the big picture it can be overwhelming - try just taking it one day at a time. Don't focus so much on how far you have to go, look at how far you've come and make small goals that will eventually lead you to the end.

You've lost those 6kg before (and another ten on top of that - which is awesome!), so you know you can do it again. Are you an emotional eater? Do you have foods that can trigger you to binge? Try and identify what it was that made you yo-yo, and develop strategies for next time the situation arises.

Don't let your happiness be dictated by your weight. Be happy because you are doing things that will benefit you in the long run and because you are strong enough to make those changes

Currently dealing with my own yo-yo. Lost 85 lbs+, and ended up gaining back 18 of them. I've decided to begin my journey to continue where I left off.

I'll be regularly updating my posts with my progress, but i would be lieing if i said it's not a challenge. Eventually everyone comes down to making the choice of whether the dedication is worth it or not. That's why I'm liking this site; a place to motivate people when we're feeling in the dumps.

Stop dieting, start changing your eating habits.
Normally when people say diet, they mean cut out everything that is a poor choice in food.
When I say change your eating habits, I mean you can still have ice cream, just once a week. If you go to McDonalds, don't get the fries. You can still enjoy food, just cut back bits and pieces. As your progress slows, cut out another piece. It is far easier to stop ordering fries at McDonalds, than to stop eating McDonalds. After a while of no fries, you won't want the burger either. After a while, everything falls into place.
