When you hit a plateau (no change in weight for 4-6 weeks) change up what you are doing. Eat more, scatter your calories, change the type of exercise you do, the time you exercise, or how intense you exercise. Constantly changing things up helps to avoid a plateau.

Haven't hit a plateau since I set my cals & goals according to the info in this topic: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/974889-in-place-of-a-road-map-short-n-sweet

That's the short version, there's a link to the full read in the thread. Good info. Been working great for me for over 18 months.

I hate hitting or running off of a plateau.

I employ a typical engineers solution to my weight loss so far.

    (1) I try to weigh everything as much as possible but try not to get too stressed.

    (2) If I feel I want more to eat then I exercise a deficit to allow me to eat more.

    (3) every time I lose weight then I reset by food target to a slightly lower target. I know MFP does this after an amount of weight loss but I would rather not have such big steps.

    (4) This is the nerdy bit, after a few months using MFP, I reviewed by calculated by net calories compared to a maintain weight target ( i.e. net compared to 2500 kCal per day). I divided this by 9 ( 9 kcal per g of fat) to calc my weight loss of grams. I used this as a check on the weight loss I have achieved to confirm that I was being accurate calculating by net calories.

To summarise, accuracy in calculating net calories is the answer
