    It's a fictional tool from the absurdly long running British sci-fi tv show Doctor Who.

    When first introduced it did mostly screwdriver'ish things. People used it to literally remove screws and then maybe fiddle with the inside of a computer or something.

    Over the decades it's capabilities have gradually increased. At this point it's basically a magic wand. Any time there's anything vaguely scientific or mechanical that needs to be done the doctor just waves his screwdriver at it. Then there is a short buzzing noise and the plot moves forward.
