What is a good pedometer to buy?

Options
I am going to look into purchasing a pedometer. I have bought "cheap" ones in the past I find they are not so accurate. Looking for suggestions on what to buy. Would like one that counts, steps, miles, and if possible calories burned..... Would love the FitBit but cant afford that right now.
Thank you in advance for your help!

I have an Iphone and bought an App called ITreadmill. It measures lots of things: Distance, cals burned, time, average speed, average pace, MPH, etc. If you have an Iphone, I'd recommeng it.

well, this won't be super helpful because I was going to suggest Fitbit. If there's any way you can afford it, it is so great. Accurate and easy to use and synchs automatically so no fuss. I've tried other peds over the years and it was such a pain trying to figure out my steps and so on. Ilove my fitbit.

Not sure what your price-range is, but the Fitbit Zip is a little cheaper than the original.

Omron has a few models that seem to get good reviews, and run about half the price of the Zip:

I wore the Omron HJ-112 Pocket Pedometer for about 8 months and still love it! It is basic, no worrying about syncing, losing it, etc. I found it to be very helpful. I purchased mine on Amazon.com. Really a great product!!!

Do you have a phone with GPS? Is more accurate and has taken the place of pedometers for the most part.

Can I ask what kind of steps the majority of yours are? I mean, is it mostly everyday walking around the house, or mostly runs? I have found that it matters as some pedometers are more accurate for around the house and others are more accurate for aerobic exercise. I literally have four of them plus my phone but I mostly use my $8 Radio Shack one. Strangely, it's my favorite. It's less accurate for exercising but more accurate for things like chasing a toddler around the living room. It has very few features. I use an Omron HJ303 when I need something accurate for exercising or need something with a multi-day memory for instance when traveling. My husband says I should start a pedometer review blog. The Omron is more comfortable as well.

If you have used the cheap one and found it inaccurate, I'd go for the Omron HJ303. It also has the features you are looking for. I got mine at Walgreens for $40.

I use this ap as well but I also have found that it does drain your phone battery rather quickly and wearing a phone in your pocket can be uncomfortable compared to a pedometer and is impossible if you are wearing a skirt.

Have to agree with baconbits. I love my Fitbit One.

Here are a few links where you can compare trackers:
    1. http://www.getgrok.com/2013/01/a-comparative-review-28-days-with-the-fitbit-one-jawbone-up-nike-fuelband-and-bodymedia-link/
    2. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2404445,00.asp

Popular Brands (not a complete list; these costs are off their websites but you can find deals on Amazon and eBay, or sometimes these brands offer promotions):

    * BodyMedia Core: $119 for the tracker, online account $6.95/month, free smartphone app, http://www.bodymedia.com/
    * BodyMedia Link: $149 for the tracker, online account $6.95/month, free smartphone app, http://www.bodymedia.com/
    * Jawbone UP: $129.99 for the tracker, can only be used in conjunction with a smartphone, https://jawbone.com/up
    * Fitbit One: $99.95 for the tracker, free online account, free smartphone app, http://www.fitbit.com/home
    * Fitbit Flex: $99.95 for the tracker, free online account, free smartphone app, http://www.fitbit.com/home
    * Fitbit Zip: $59.95 for the tracker, free online account, free smartphone app, http://www.fitbit.com/home
    * Striiv Play: $69.95 for the tracker, can only be used in conjunction with a smartphone, http://www.striiv.com/products/striivplay/
    * Larklife: $149.99 for the tracker, free online account, free smartphone app, http://lark.com/products/larklife/experience
    * Nike+ FuelBand: $149 for the tracker, free online account, free smartphone app, http://www.nike.com/us/en_us/c/nikeplus-fuelband?

There's plenty more trackers out there. You can do a Google search on fitness trackers and you'll find plenty of options there.

Hope this helps. Good luck in your search.

Just curious as to why people wear them/ track all day? I use my phone app when I go for long walks or runs but not for everyday activity.

In the case of the Fitbit, it'll help estimate your daily calorie burn. I set my profile to sedentary here on MFP, and then Fitbit will adjust my calorie goal up or down depending on how active I am relative to that sedentary level.

You can use a regular pedometer to do some of the same estimation, but the automation you get from linking Fitbit to MFP is really nice.

You can also just use the pedometer to set daily goals for yourself (e.g. walk 10k steps in a day).
