6 weeks vacation weight gain in Italy? help!

hi everyone! I've currently been in Italy since the 25th of June, was in Palermo for a wedding about 5 days after i arrived and last week i was in Rome for 4 days. I am currently staying in my Nonna's (my grandmother) hometown which is very very small. I have 2 more weeks to go but I feel funny, sometimes I feel like I gained 100 lbs and other days I feel really skinny. I was a gym rat before I came, I spent all last year in the gym everyday and started really enjoying how I looked. I'm by no means overweight, 5'6" and before i came weighed around 117-118lbs. However its hard to tell how much i weigh now because i think the scale i have is off; its stressing me out because i feel like my hard work will be reversed! I don't really do much here, I walk more than I do at home but I don't think enough to keep weight off, I certainly felt skinnier in Rome, though.

I rarely eat pasta at home and when I do it's whole wheat and I work out right after, but everyone knows how Italians are with pasta and pastries! I can only resist so much, honestly! Ill have a couple cookies or pastries with espresso after lunch but other than that I eat fairly well, I maybe have pasta once a day if that and all other things I eat are homegrown and organic.

So my questions are, how much weight do you think I have the ability to gain over here? Given my starting weight? And how fast do you think it will be for me to get back on track again and be back down to my starting weight of once I'm home?

117 seems like a low number for being 5"6 right? Do you feel that bad at 121? I"m 5"2 and 144 and never weighed this much. I used to think the 130's were bad but now I would luv to be that again....
    Good luck!

You're going to gain weight.....dependent upon how much you work out, but you're probably not going to gain that much fat in that amount of time. It will most likely be water weight due to sodium retention.

I went on a 7 day cruise, still worked out in the morning, but still ate whatever wanted. When I got home I was 8lbs heavier than when I left. I weight myself 4 days later after being back on my normal eating and exercise program and lost all 8 lbs.

I just got back from a 5 day vacation. I gained 5 lbs from the time I left until it was time to come home. Within 6 days I dropped all 5 lbs, plus 1. I had dropped all 5 lbs I gained within 2 workouts.

Stay active, but understand you'll gain some weight, but it should melt off when you get back on your schedule.

My husband is Italian, and every time we go I lose weight even though I eat more. We walk a lot more there, and even though we eat a lot, it is all healthy. I lived there for 5 years and lost weight and kept it off--as soon as I came back to the states I gained it all back and then some!

Get over it and just enjoy your vacation. Worry about it when you return from Italy. This his how eating disorders start, it seems like you are underweight to begin with, I would love to be fattened up in Italy, savor it. By the way I don't think the scale is off.

The great thing I've noticed about Italy though are the portions. I swear even in the touristy sections of Rome you can tell that they try to accommodate the Americans by serving larger portions!

ooh jenna you lucky girl - 6 weeks in italy is heaven!!

i think it's impossible to guess how much weight you could put on - my suggestion would be to get as active as possible, and make better choices. eat fish instead of pasta, skip the pastries in the morning and evening (difficult i know).

it's summer there now so hopefully you are out walking, hiking and swimming.

    enjoy your break!

If I ever get to go to Italy, I will give myself a free pass. Enjoy (within reason) worry about it when you get back.

I don't think it's fair to generalize that because I am concerned about weight gain I have a chance of developing an eating disorder. I am merely just trying to get ideas from other users who may have had the same experience as me.

I second this. I was in Italy for a week last year (also other countries for 2 other weeks but German/Eastern European countries are no nearly as healthy cuisine wise at Italy) and I lost weight within a few days of being there just because the portions are smaller and we were walking EVERYWHERE (I think we took the tram in Rome once). Once you get back on your normal routine I'm sure the weight will come right back off.

Understood all! I've heard many people say that the weight they gain comes off after getting back to their normal routine. That's all I needed to know, thanks:) until then though I'm going to enjoy the rest of the time I have here! Rome was amazing, I'd love to stay there for a whole month

I don't understand your attitude. This forum isn't about who has the best life or not, it's about health and weight loss. OP is not doing anything wrong by worrying about putting on weight. There will be loads of similar posts. Give her a break.

I am aware it is an open forum and I appreciate you expressing your opinion as you have every right too. I've noticed the amount of weight that you lost and that's awesome, and that's in all sincerity. I don't think fighting on forums like this is worth any of our time
