Water retention in muscles after starting exercise

I tried googling the answer to this, but I'm not seeing any adequate answers. I've read that when you start exercise, your muscles retain water to repair themselves. I totally get that. My question is, how long does it typically take (or maybe from your own experience) for your muscles to let go of the water? Does it take a few days? A few weeks? Months?
Seriously just curious. I was thinking about it all this morning during my morning walk, lol!
