Too much water at one time?

I don't get my workout done until right before I go to bed, so I do the workout, then drink 5 cups of water all in one go. (I'm a wimp/cheap so I use 20oz water bottles as weights and drink them after.) I have a few concerns about this so I want to see if it's a bad thing... Mainly because last night I didn't even have time to shower after so I just drank all of it and laid down for bed. I woke up a few times to go to the bathroom which was expected but also my stomach hurt a bit. In a weird way, not nausea or anything like that. Was that from the water? Also when I drink all the water it's almost like it's forcing it's way down...

Now besides telling me I'm stupid, space it out, do my workout earlier, all of which I know and am trying to do, can you tell me if any of that is right? Does water make you feel like that?

I think so. I am the same, I workout before bed but don't drink THAT much water. I like to sleep  . However I have sat down at the computer and before bed realize that I have downed 7 or 8 bottles while sitting there. I have to pee so bad some nights that yes my stomach hurts. Maybe it just takes a lot to wake me up and it has to get that bad before I get up. I am not really sure but I would assume if you have that much in your bladder it can get pretty uncomfortable.
  • I completely understand lack of time till end of day. You may be forcing yourself to have too much water at one time, don't force. Also sometimes when i have really worked my abs my stomach will burn, not sure what the reason is, but if i eat something small it usually helps. Try to spread your water consumption out a lil more. Hope I helped a lil, Good luck.

I didn't have to go that bad, I'm actually woken up more by my family being loud, then realise I have to go. It's hard to describe, it wasn't sharp pain either really... Maybe it's the little hypochondriac inside me but someone once mentioned your kidneys so I think that's what has me worried.

Thank you both for the suggestions. :)

I think that I read that the kidneys cannot process more than 1 L per hour (32 oz) but I can't seem to find that on google again. I think that you are ok to be drinking 20 oz in the evening as long as it doesn't make you have to get up a million times in the night, go for it!

yep, 20 oz isn't going to cause you much in the way of issues, maybe the first few times just because you aren't used to it. Not sure about the upset stomach though, could be the water, or it could be exercising right before bed, or something you ate, or a virus...etc. Hard to tell without repeating the activity and ruling out other possibilities.

One thing I will say though, even though I'm an advocate of exercising when ever you can, you really should give your body a good hour after intense exercise in order to slow down it's metabolic rate. That's more because it's difficult to sleep with elevated hormone levels, but also because that can throw off your sleep cycles and make you have more light sleep and less deep sleep, which is when your body does it's real recovery work. Just a little note to take with ya.

    -regards.

One of the things I learned in the last 2 years at Weight Watchers (I was a leader) was that, although water is the BEST choice, it is not directly linked with weight loss. ANY liquids count for your hydration (except alcohol) and that we only need 6 - 8 oz. servings of liquids. I used to choke down tons of water too and no longer do that. Guess what? WW is right! I would probably drink until I felt hydrated - maybe 16 oz. - after a work out.

I'm here working on losing 7 pounds but have mainted an over 40 lb weight loss for almost 10 years. Good luck!

I have a sticky note next to my mouse at work that tells me (links to what is said above) a healthy kidney can process 30 oz. of liquid/hour.
I try and drink up to 96 oz. while here at work, so my sticky says drink 60 oz. in 2 hours or longer and 120 ounces in 4 hours or longer.
It takes me at least 4 hours to drink 96 ounces, so I'm not worried, but it's a helpful reminder.
