This is probably not news for anyone who has been tracking their calories for a while, but it's a neat photo series showing what 200 calories worth of food looks like. Check it out!

I always like to remind myself with articles like this because it gives me perspective.0

One can easily see the importance of high calorie foods for human civilization's survival illustrated by this series of pictures.0

I've seen this so many times, but I always look at it whenever its posted. I love it.0

Damn you gummi bears for being so delicious!0

Gummi Bears are evil... but so delicious.0

It pretty much matches what I've found over the past year or so. It's interesting to see the comparison using the same plate with no other distractions.0

I know what I'll be having tonight

Thanks for posting. It's a good reminder!0

wow, The other day I went to the store and was about to buy a bag of gummy bears (no nutritional info available since I spooned the bears into a self serving bag) and I rationalized it by telling myself I didn't take very much. I'm really glad I didn't buy them, because seeing this made me realize I saved myself about 800-1,000 calories ahaha0

Cool I really liked looking at this. I just upped my calories and think I have to up them more. Nice to know I just eat a few nuts and that should get me right up there.0

Thanks for sharing this.0

Now I'm hungry for a Snickers.0

That's an interesting perspective....
Things like that can be deceiving to people who are uneducated, though. Like peanut butter for instance- the uneducated eye would say "Well, why would I eat 200 calories of peanut butter (a tiny little dollop) when I can have an ENTIRE plate full of celery/brocolli/carrots for the same calories?" or "I can have a hand full of gummy bears for the same amount of calories as a little blob of peanut butter!"0 -

 I was thinking something along those lines.0 -
Looks like I'm going to buy some Fiber One cereal, Puffed Wheat, and Puffed Rice! More for less calories than even my oatmeal! And then I'll throw a packet or two of Splenda if I need a touch of sweetness, plus some berries!
Thank you for this post!0 -
This was a good idea. I weigh and measure everything but this is neat to see. Thank you!0

This a good reminder. puts everything into perspective when you look at in pictures like this.. Sort of Eat this, not that kind of thing!0

little under half a bottle of huy fong sriracha will net you 200 calories too.... ;p0

Thanks for posting...great reminder. Since joining mfp and tracking intake, I've found a few surprises. My greatest disappointment has been Grape Nuts. Without any milk, 200 calories of those crunchy little nuggets just doesn't go very far!0
-
The ones that make me sad are the blueberry muffin, cheese, peanut butter and snickers0

Thanks, this is really interesting! The glazed donut makes me laugh......just that little piece!0

Damn, I want a glazed donut now.0

I think this is a great example of why low-carb diets are good.
Even though I am now convinced, after reading the article posted here, that a calorie is a calorie and there is nothing chemically magical about a low-carb diet, I am convinced that it is easier to lose weight on a low-carb diet.
The reason? On a high-carb diet you will struggle a lot more with portion control. Take a look at some of the high-carb photos in the link presented by the OP. In some cases, the 200 calorie portion of food is what I would consume as one handful of many handfuls of such a snack.
Sit down and eat your fill of Fruit Loops compared to eating your fill of eggs and see which one packs on more calories.
I think that if you eat a natural, unprocessed diet, there just aren't that many foods available to eat that are so super-appealing that you will stuff yourself with them, unless you are going to lay down some serious cash on steak, shrimp, and lobster.
But in low-carb fantasy land, holy *kitten* you can drink 75% of your daily calories in one milkshake and be hungry a half-hour later.
So low-carb diets may not be caloricly any different than a high-carb diet, but I think portion control is a lot harder with a low-carb diet.0 -

What bugs me is that so many places don't offer anything in the 200-calorie range. Try to find a 200-calorie chocolate chip cookie for sale, for example. That would be an okay snack, but anywhere you go, you only see 450-calorie monster cookies!0 -
Thanks for the info, KNOWLEDGE IS POWER0

Pfft! Now I want Bailey's, drizzled over ice cream, topped with salted caramel sauce and a 99 stuck in the top for good measure. :grumble:0
