How to prevent muscle atrophy

I am weight training 3 times a week and trying to decrease my body fat % and tone up. However, I am also an avid runner and training for an event. I hear a lot about steady state cardio burning muscle, and I was wondering if there is anything I can do to prevent the process? I eat at least 100g of protein every day and eat plenty of calories, sleep 8 hours, etc. Any advice?

Pretty much what you're doing - lift heavy, eat protein, rest. You could up the protein a smidge - 1g/lb of bodyweight isn't a bad idea. If "an event" isn't "sprinting", you're probably going to lose some muscle no matter what you do, but you can definitely hold on to more if you work at it.

Muscles atrophy from lack of exercise not because of exercise.

I do HIIT twice a week uphill, usually with one long session of steady state cardio.

You're fine...eat, get your protein, lift, etc

This really only becomes an issue with individuals who only do aerobic training for hours on end and neglect to do resistance work. It also requires some substantial mileage.
