walking in place

does anyone know if you can use walking in place for a length of time (say 20 minutes) and will you burn calories? if it is raining outside it is difficult for me to walk so i wondered if just staying indoors and walking in place is equivalent? thank you for your assistance:)

I think it definitely counts.
My Rationale: Nintendo Wii (video games) has a program called Wii Fit, where you hold one of the remote controls and "run" in place. It calculates your exertion and tells you how many calories you've burned. Its measurements are based on the simulations of the remote control during your movement (kind of like that of a pedometer).
So if all else fails, wear a reliable pedometer and as long as it tracks your steps, you can definitely count it toward exercise, especially on those rainy days!!

I use Leslie Sansone's Walk away the pounds DVD's and think they are great. Not as hard core as the younger people on this board do but great for me. I got the 5 mile walk which came with some hand weights, stretchies and elastic waist belt. The is also a support group on the site, the SWAT group which uses them.0

They have DVDs out that you can walk 4 miles in your own living room. Leslie something. I have one, it works pretty well.0

Yes you will definitely burn calories, you are moving about, so it does count0

These 2 are 1 mile each. You can create a playlist if you have an account and then you can play them all consecutively. (I have also recently discovered that I can put them on my RealPlayer (free download) and not download the commercials! This is a much smoother transition even than as a youtube playlist.)
