How fast do you build muscle?

My weight has been up the last week for no reason. The only thing I've done different is added strength training. Can I be gaining weight from that? I'm trying not to worry too much about it, but it's hard!

I read on here that you retain water in your muscles when you strength train to help the rebuilding process0

The weight increase can be due to either natural changes in weight or due to water rentention from the weight lifting.
While in a calorie deficit you will not gain any real amounts of muscle. You need to eat at a surplus and lift heavy weights to build muscle.0
