Literally feel ill

I just started the C25k app today and don't have ANY idea how I'm going to get through the first week..... I literally felt like I was going to pass out or throw up... or both when I finished the last run interval. Talk about discouraging! Should I stay on day 1 until I don't feel like I'm going to die when I finish, or just keep pushing through each day and hope it gets better?

    keep going.
I was a runner when I was younger then I had kids, sat around a bit, got chubby and then picked up running again thinking it would be easy... it wasn't. I felt exactly like you.... like I was gonna cry, die and be sick all at the same time lol. It's called being unfit.

You have to carry on, keep going and do it regularly. Oh and don't be eating 1200 calories a day as that will not help. Eat properly, eat well and push through the pain.... it gets easier and before you know it, you will start to enjoy it :)

Keep with it as you will gradually build endurance. I started four weeks ago and had not done any sort of running/jogging since high school, many many years ago. I felt the same way but I stuck with it and so far I have not had to repeat any days/weeks. All three days will be the same so you are able to get used to it before progressing. BTW I weight 224lbs so if I can do this so can you!!! Stick with it and you will surprise yourself.

I'd say complete week 1. If you still feel the same, repeat week 1 until you are ready to progress. A good number of people have to repeat weeks when doing C25k.

Don't eat before your walk/run. If your stomach is fairly empty you are less likely be nauseated. Also, make sure you are eating enough protein and calories to fuel the exercise.

If it's hot out maybe try going earlier or later in the day when it's cooler. Some people are very sensitive to heat and get light-headed.

Thanks! It helps to hear someone else felt the same way and got through it. Not sure I'll ever love running... but if I can get to the point where it doesn't make me feel like crying/dying/being sick (wel said!) then I do believe the gain will be worth it.

I didn't eat anything before the run for that very reason. I knew it would make me feel worse. I had a banana this morning for breakast and then ran before lunch. It is rather warm here today so I might try to run when the sun is down and see if that helps the lightheadedness. I have a feeling it's mostly just from being that out of shape though.

Are you a runner ? Maybe the C25 it not the program to start with. Have you tried any off the bluefin programs I use them all the time they have a few 5 and 10 k programs also here is the link for the best of luck with your running

I agree with the idea that you're doing the running intervals too fast. I read somewhere, "If you can go slower, then go slower." -- try it. Slow and steady wins the race! Seriously -- don't worry about speed. Worry about endurance right now, because speed comes more naturally later.

If I remember correctly, W1 D2-D3 are the same as D1 so just keep progressing through the week -- running more slowly -- and if after that you feel the need to repeat the week, do it. Plenty of people do.

Part of the aim of the C25K plan is that it helps you learn to pace yourself. You are probably taking the running intervals too fast. I had success by consciously slowing myself to a very slow running pace (almost where I felt like I could walk it faster) because I was keeping in mind that the goal was to be able to eventually run the whole 5K at that pace.

Once I was able to do that, the overall pace drastically improved on its own.

This is exactly what I would say.

most people don't run far enough on their first wind to find out they have a second.

    mind over body.

edit to show i actually know what i'm talking about, i started c25k when i was just over 200lbs, kept running till i hit 180s then switched to kickboxing. i hate running, and felt like i was gonna die. but i kept pushing.

It will be. Don't give up. Slow the pace if you have to but don't give up :)

I didn't realize all of the days the first week are the same (I didn't look that far ahead obviously lol I think I was scared to) That makes me feel a little bit better at least!! I'll give it a go and see how I feel at the end of the week. Sorry if this is a silly question, but am I supposed to be running every other day... what kind of schedule do you follow?

3x a week if you're a beginner. leave time for your muscles to repair. you will be sore.

lol Thanks, that was a mild kick in the pants to keep going. I appreciate it. I'm at 196 now, so a comparable starting weight at least. I'll keep pushing.
  • Ok YAY!! I decided last week that I would take the weekend off and literally start from scratch again on Monday (today). So I just ran on my lunch break and I didn't feel like I was going to die at the end of the run (I was still miserable lol but didn't want to die)... and I ran a slightly longer distance this time which means I didn't have to slow my running pace!! Progress in 1 day as small as it was makes me happy :D Went from a 14:06 min.mile to 13:31. and 1.31 miles pace to 1.37 Just needed to share! Now I'm excited!! I did note that it's considerably cooler here today than it was on my first day, but I think I'll compensate for that by changing what time I run on the warmer days.

I know!! I was so excited lol. I thought for sure after day 1 that I would feel that way every time. I'm glad to admit you were right! Thanks :D
  • Alright, figured an update was totally due because.... I DID IT!!!! I just completed c25k week 9 day 3 today and guess who ran a full 5k?! OMG I can't believe I'm able to say that, but I made it. Took one week off in mid June due to blowing out my back, but started right back as soon as I could and just finished the program today. I LOVE c25k and I'm pretty sure I'm hooked on running now. I feel AMAZING right now. Woot! I've seen people say "trust the training" over and over and they are so so right!! It will happen and I surprised myself each and every week by doing what I thought I could not. It's just such and awesome feeling.
