Is anyone else doing Atkins?

I started the induction phase today, I am hopeful because I am very carb sensitive and usually low carb is the only way I am able to lose weight.

How long do you stay in inductions phase? How much have you lost? Did you find it easy to stick to?

I'm currently at about 188lbs, 5'2 and I would like to lose a total of 50lb. Please feel free to add me!

I wish I was able to do that but I am insulin resistant therefore extremely carb sensitive. I'm under the care of a naturopath at the moment who is closely monitoring my insulin and thyroid levels to keep them optimal for weight loss. I just don't respond to eating carbs.

I tried Atkins, and it didn't work for me at all. All it did was make me hate eggs for a really, really long time. Since you're carb sensitive, then why don't you just go gluten-free instead of following a diet written by a quack doctor? Someone who treated cancer patients with 'ozone' shouldn't be trusted with your health and eating.

There really isn't a huge difference between the two in my opinion, because the foods that i do eat are clean and gluten free. you are allowed to have carbs with gluten free such as quinoa and such but i cant handle the carbs. I am honestly just using atkins as a guideline. I don't eat eggs and never will, I don't digest them and I have allergic reactions. I like the weight loss I get with Keto.
  • Hi VanCityFit,

I am currently in the Induction Phase of Atkins. This Thursday August 1, 2013 will mark the end of my second week. I have a lot of weight to lose 9 (85 lbs), so I am going to stay in the Induction Phase for a couple of months. So far I have lost 9 pounds and that was done by the end of the first week, Thursday July 25th. I haven't lost anything since; however I am feeling great and have loads of energy. I have been sticking to the diet faithfully and I have been in ketosis regularly since day 3, so I know the scale is going to move again real soon. I suppose my body had to use all of those carbs that I had ate before starting before ketosis could begin. Best of luck.

I quit eating Atkins Advantage bars, way too much saturated and total fat compared to other brands like Quest.

I don't eat any bars or prepare foods, I prefer to use whole foods and eat clean.

You should go keto. It's like atkins, but focuses more on healthy fats and moderate protein.

I started induction April 15th. I love eating this way. I try to keep my carbs under 30 or so. Feel great. Have lost 28 pounds so far but still have a good deal to go. Feel free to add me.

I've done Keto plenty of time, I typically fail after a few weeks because it is so restrictive. I mainly like Atkins because I can have some dairy, the cheese allows me to keep my sanity and stay on track.

I'm doing south beach. My doctor told me to try it.

I think you normally stay in phase 1 for two weeks, but the book will tell you for sure.

    Best of luck!

Hint: Because people on keto need the fat.

No-I am a runner and need my carbs. Also carbs vs anything else will not make you gain weight-eating too much does that. I understand carb sensitivity, been there, but I switched from processed (white bread, pasta and rice) to whole grain and it has made a huge difference.

and remember fruits and veggies are carbs!

Full fat dairy like cheese, sour cream, cream cheese are great keto foods.

I'm going to be doing more research. I think I will just mainly stick to low carb all around. I do like healthy fats such as all natural PB and nuts. I think I will just carb cycle. The differences between Keto and Atkins are pretty marginal, but I'm just going to go with my gut.

Just a question out of curiosity (not trying to be mean, honestly!), you say you like Atkins because it 'allows' some dairy. So why don't you just use the food database on here to log low-carb foods, track your calories and have your dairy products as you wish? I'm just wondering, since you don't need to be on any type of diet to eat low-carb, it's a factor you can control just as you can control sugar or fat intake, without following any sort of *brand name* diets.

I tried the switch to whole grain as well but still gained weight. I love fruit but it is so high on e glycemic index, I think staying under 50g of carbs a day is my best bet. I'm on meds for insulin regulation so I'm hoping that will help now.

Just don't know anything about the Atkins diet. The only "diet" I've been really doing is the lean gains, where you intermittent fast for at least 14-16 hours a day - still eat the exact same amount of food just in an eight hour window. I used to eat an Atkins bar every morning at work for breakfast - too much fat unless like you said you are following a strict plan. I was eating it mostly for the fiber.

I've done Atkins multiple times and had a lot of success. I am/wasn't very overweight, only needed to lose about 15-20lbs and I was able to do that in a month on Atkins. I do usually stay in the induction phase a little longer than two weeks, but I do sometimes add 0 carb alcohol when I go out.

What I love about low carb/Atkins is that you can stuff yourself full of 0 carb food and you still lose weight. When you count calories, if you've eaten all your calories for the day, you have to exercise again if you want to eat. I'm a big eater and always have been, so it's nice being able to eat unlimited amounts of food as long as it's low carb. I also like Atkins because I was in college while I did it (in Wisconsin--drinking capital of the world) so I could drink as long as it was 0 carbs. Vodka has no carbs, so I drank a lot of vodka waters. And, because it was 0 carbs, it didn't cause me to gain weight!

What I don't like about low carb/Atkins is that it gets boring. I got SO sick of eating cheese, meat, and vegetables. I just wanted some pasta, rice, and potatoes every now and then! The longer I was on the diet, the more and more cheat days I'd give myself. It's also hard when you live with people who aren't doing the diet or you have friends that like to go out a lot. I LOVE meat, cheese, and veggies, but it gets very old very fast. Not much variety. But I might just be a bit pickier of an eater--who knows.

Overall I think it's good for quick weight loss, but unless you continue on it, the weight comes back quite easily. I always tried to do it for a few weeks to a few months as a "jump start" to weight loss and eating healthy. But it seems like I always gained the weight back in a few months. However, right now I'm eating healthy and exercising and having a HELL of a time losing weight, so I'm thinking about going low carb again. (Sorry for the novel).
