Yahoo is renowned for being able to have accounts hacked and taken over. I've gotten so many spam messages selling junk from friends whose accounts have been taken over. First thing you need to do is get your passwords reset. Changing them often is a good idea. Make the passwords difficult to guess. Some free email sites are more difficult to hack like Google, but Yahoo and Hotmail are infamous for the ease with which they can be breached.

Thank you for all your replies .. guess we've lost some things then. grrr.
Would it be smarter to stick w/Google? I'd need to delete my yahoo
    account. So stressful.

Hmm. Not seeing any problems with my Yahoo accounts at the moment. I wonder if it might have anything to do with them retiring a large number of inactive accounts; though that shouldn't affect you, it seems.

In terms of functionality, I much prefer gmail, and use that for the majority of my personal email needs.

Google does have better security. I've never had my account breached and had those lovely spam messages come from my google acount but I have from my yahoo account. And I've had a Yahoo account from nearly the beginning. When your Yahoo mail address is simply your first and last name, that's it, and you have a relatively common first and last name, you know how long you've had the account.

I still have my yahoo account, I just almost never look at it. I've probably got about 5-10k of unread messages. lol.
