Fajitas without the tortillas or a salad.0
-
Leave the nachos and tortillas a alone.
Have a load of chicken breast or fajita meat and salad.
Thats what I eat when I go to mexican restaurants. Bring on the MEAT!! and stack up with salad and cheese.
A few margaritas wouldnt go amiss either LOL0 -
I agree! Just eat some fajitas (steak, chicken or mix), salad. No rice, no tortilla
It's really easy and so enjoyable0 -
Fajitas, no tortillas. Taco salad, without the tortilla bowl. Add guacamole or avocados to whatever. Delicious.0

Dont worry about it and enjoy yourself.
Why undermine her?0 -
Ooo. Mexican food always gets me. Good luck.
Avoid the rice, tortilla chips, rice, and tortillas. Maybe look for some grilled chicken with a small veggie side.0 -
I usually find a grilled chicken and veggie dish - but the grilled veg is usually cooked in an oil bath...but black beans aren't so bad. My problem is the chips - they're my achilles heel.
I bargain with myself and get an Ice-T sans sugar and eat just a few chips vs my old routine of a large margarita and 2 bowls of chips.
The more authentic places vs your Tex-mex should have decent fish items to choose from. If all else fails, I'd try fajitas.0 -
Mexican food is my kryptonite! I usually cave and have my regular bean and cheese burrito with a side of beans, rice, sour cream and guacamole. I know that isn't helpful.
You could go with a black bean soup, gazpacho and tell them no chips please!0 -
Fajitas are a great idea! Just pass on the tortillas!0
-
This is supposed to be a no-brainer, but I'll say it anyway: skip the chips and salsa.0
-
Margaritas!!! :drinker:0

I usually do fajitas with no tortillas, no rice & beans or whatever their camarones (shrimp) dish is. Most Mexican places have at least one camarones dish - usually it's jumbo shrimp sauteed in garlic and spices. I usually allow myself about a dozen chips with salsa.0
-
A huge marinated steak...any Mexican restaurant worth it's salt will have marinated meat0
-
PS where are you going in IL so I can judge if it's authentic enough?0
-
Camarones rancheros, and skip the rice and tortillas. Just shrimp and veggies that way.0
-
If your going to a Major chain type they usually have alternative options if you ask.
-Stay away from the free chips, sometimes I order a side of guacamole and eat salsa and guac on a fork LOL. My place has carrots/celery with ranch as an option.
-steamed veggies instead of Refried Beans and rice or if they have Ranchero beans that are no fried.
- go for a baked fish dish, salad with dressing on the side or just use the guac and salsa. Fajitas with no tortillas, soup as long as it is not cream based, Tacos without the shell is something I order a lot.
Mexican is one of the easier places to pick smarter choices. Good luck and have a good time!0 -
Any kind of taco.. just ask for lettuce to wrap them instead of torillas0

alcohol is good, tequila, rum??
yum.0 -
I guess you've gathered you should avoid the tortillas...and the bucket of tortilla CHIPS they'll bring you. Don't forget that this food is SALTY, too, so you might retain a little water.
That said, don't avoid the carbs COMPLETELY - that's half the goodness of Mexican. Yes - push the protein and veggies, and limit yourself to one tortilla or a handful of chips. Get someone to help you if you need it.
If you can get frijoles rather than refried beans, some of those would be good too. If you can get them, you can eat a little rice - they complement each other and make a more complete carb your body will actually burn. :-)
Order ala carte as opposed to the combo plate - you can control your servings better. Maybe.
The trick is to keep the basket of chips and warmer full of tortillas as far away from you as possible...
Good luck!0 -
MARGARITAS OF COURSE.... ok not really...
I agree with most of the other posters... fajitas are a great choice or anything grilled...
pollo ranchero is my fav... but when I go I cant hesitate eating the chips and salsa0 -
I loooooooove Mexican food! Noms.
Ole!0 -
my best piece of advice is to avoid the chips.
eat lots of meat and veggies if you can! and water instead of margaritas0 -
Also Caldo soups with either chicken or beef are really good. They tend to have just the veggies and meat in them. I would agree about the other advice above about tortillas, chips, rice and refried beans.0

Chile rellanos. Chile stuffed with cheese, the batter is actually eggs, with whipped whites and the yolks added back to the stiffly beaten whites.
Better choice is fajitas with chicken or shrimp, ask for guacamole and salsa instead of rice and beans.0 -
Fajitas, whatever kind you like, no tortillas! They always give you huge portions with fajitas so you can fill up without the tortillas.0
