I need some help/advice...

As a disclaimer, I'd like to say that I know weight loss is going to be hard for me because I have hypothyroidism. I do take meds for it (that are working; I'd feel crappy if they didn't), but this is ridiculous. I'm 5'4" and as of today, 140 lbs (my all-time high). I know it's not THAT heavy, but I look at it this way: if I gain five more pounds, I am officially overweight. And it's depressing.

I always manage to stay under calories and mostly under fat (I slipped up once or twice, but I'm generally at about half or 3/4 of my target fat consumption). I'm a student and my campus has a TON of stairs, etc. so I'm always running around at school. And yet I just can't lose weight.

Does anyone have any tips that could help me? Or even just some words of support? I mean, I changed back to my old birth control (I weighed 127 before I started the free Planned Parenthood brand, which caused me to balloon to 138 in less than two months), but it's been three weeks and I've seen no improvement whatsoever. I FEEL thinner, but I step on the scale or measure my waist, etc. and there is no sign of improvement. I am almost in tears right now...just so, so upset that I can't fix myself. :(

You should probably give yourself some grace in this instance and take some time to re-think and re-shape your goals. I actually know someone whose goal weight is your current weight (at the same height) and they look fantastic! :glasses:

Since you know you have a pre-existing medical condition, you should consult with your physician about what types of things he/she recommends.

You may need to consider adding some variety to your workouts by taking a class, joining a rec league or hitting the gym with a friend. Keep reworking things until you find something effective and fun: Remember that weight loss takes time and you will find something that works!
  • I know I should be a lot nicer to myself, and I don't look THAT bad. It's just the numbers that are bugging me (stupid, I know). I don't have insurance, but need to see how much it'll cost to see my endocrinologist again...I technically don't have to see him until March, but I'd like to get in sooner and figure out what the hell's going on. Maybe I'll give it a few months to see if the change in the Pill does anything to help.

I'm just frustrated, I guess, because this seems so unnatural. I was about 130/135 (fluctuated a ton) before I went on the stupid monophasic pill, which just killed my weight. I had to go up three (count 'em) pants sizes and shirts I was able to wear (that were loose) just a year ago are now really snug.

    Thank you for the encouragement!

Good for you to catch it now and now when you have 60 or 100 lbs to lose. I know it is hard but you seem in total control and I know you can do this too! It is going to take time - this is a lifelong journey for most of us. The less you have to lose, the slower the loss will be. Take it day by day and hang in there!
  • watch for saturated fat, sodium, and sweeteners.

over the past couple months, my mother has sworn off artificial sweeteners and now severely limits her sugar intake. shes gone down a couple clothing sizes and is very pleased with the results thus far. to avoid artificial sweeteners, youve really got to stay away from anything that has the word "diet" or "lite" on it. sure, the nutrition labels on them look great, but the ingredients can be pretty terrifying. if you can, go for whatever organic foods and beverages you can afford.

the regimen i usually follow: if youre going to have a lot of calories, have it in the morning. eat a little, many times, throughout the day. stay comfortable: no overstuffed stomach, and most certainly no growling one either. if youre trapped away from a food source for long periods at a time, keep a small healthy snack or two in your purse. avoid the snack machine at all costs (they are all over our campus lol). and always carry a drink with you, preferably water.

and, most important of all, dont make yourself miserable ! you have plenty of time to dedicate to yourself, a whole lifetime in fact. :)
  • My god, if I had to lose 60 or 100 pounds I would just cry. 13 is stressing me out! I definitely don't want to gain any more because I just custom-ordered my wedding dress, and if I get any bigger I won't be able to wear it! I feel like I use the thyroid thing too much to justify why I'm not losing, especially to one of my aunts, who is very cruel about how I'm actually a size 12 now when I was always about a 4/6. =/

Part of my "sin" is not eating in the morning, but that's because I can't--the medication I'm on requires a one-hour "buffer period" on either side of taking it so the hormones can absorb into my body. I have afternoon classes, which means I get up late--around 9 or 10 on an early day--and therefore don't eat anything until around noon. Bad, I know...

Oh, and I only drink water. Occasionally, I'll have a soda or some orange juice, but water's my big thing, lol.
