Hey ya'll. I just read this article http://empoweredsustenance.com/non-dairy-milks/ and I am curious on your take on the subject.
Do you drink them? Do you make your own or purchase them from the grocery store?

I don't drink non-dairy milk because its better for me...I drink it because I can't have lactose. No conversation or opinion (which is what that article is in the end since every section ends with a "I believe" or the" research says" without anything backing it up)....is going to make my body tolerate lactose better....

I also drink non-dairy milks because of lactose intolerance.

I have to say though, the rice and almonds milks that I drink have considerably less ingredients than the ones in that article.
Did he just buy the ones with the most ingredients or is that an American thing?

The author is a raw milk advocate, which has it's own issues-like being illegal in many areas, as well as insanely expensive if you do have a way to get it. I could get it if I 'bought' part of a dairy cow at a local farm (which is a loophole that some farmers use, to get around it being illegal to buy in our state), and then paid over $8 per gallon (on top of paying an up front fee). Years ago when I was looking into conventional, vs organic vs raw milk, I decided to just cut it out completely and I don't miss it at all. I'm also currently cutting out other dairy from my diet and recently eliminated yogurt from my green smoothies. I replaced it with unsweetened almond milk, but now I'm cutting that out and replacing it with organic tomato juice (for it's potential benefits of preventing blood clots, which I have had). So, I'm now totally milk free, dairy or otherwise :)

If I drink "dairy" milk, I will break out in full body hives and every inch of my legs and arms will swell. So my only option is Silk milk. This article isn't credible, I couldn't even make it half way through it.

I don't drink dairy milk as a lifestyle choice, so I make my own non dairy milks.

It's incredibly simple and I know exactly what's in them.

Almond milk, for example, is 1 c raw almonds soaked for ~12 hours then drained and rinse. Grab a blender and put the almonds with ~3 c water and blend on high. Strain contents with a fine mesh colander or cheesecloth and you're done! Flavor with vanilla, chocolate, etc.

I became lactose intolerant about 10 years ago. I love dairy, so now I take lactaid pills (lactose digestive enzyme) before a meal with dairy. Works great!

I only bought soy milk long before I actually gave up all dairy. It just stayed fresh longer than other milk, which always went bad before I could finish it. I am not worried about that article because I rarely drink it, just use it to cook periodically, in tea, etc. I did consider making my own almond milk and flour, still might. I make my own dairy free yogurt from time to time! Sometimes that becomes dairy free frozen yogurt, even better!

I am baffled by this. I only use almond milk in my protein shakes. Never knew you could make your own. I'll still buy it from Trader Joes, but this is good to know!

I ALWAYS read food labels & ingredients.

I personally make my own nut milks:

    ● almond

    ● pecan

    ● walnut

I also make them in variety of flavors.

I personally hate the taste of cow milk on its own.

A lot of people prefer cashew milk made this way or similarly, which is just about impossible to find in stores.
