Newbie to Tough Guy Challenge in 5 months - Advice needed

What advice can people give me to be able to complete the tough guy challenge in January 2014, see link. I started a lot of Cardio work at the beginning of July but I am not sure if this will be enough to get me through the challenge in 5 months time. What work do I need to be doing to raise my level of aerobic fitness as fast as possible

  • Running and lots of it. If you are not already a runner, Couch 2 5k will get you going in the first 2/3 months. Then build on that by adding more miles to each session and more sessions per week. The obstacles etc. will probably benefit from a bit of strength training - if you can do one or two pullups by then I think you will be ok. The main factor is running stamina!

    work hard.

it's mostly about the running and conditioning. are you doing the 10km, or the 15km? you should be able to run that distance without a problem, without stopping. don't worry about how fast you go, just that you can do it.

people say that an obstacle course race will give you moments to stop and recover, and it's true to an extent, however you are stopping to do an obstacle!! so you should have a good level of conditioning. go outside to run. through in some trail runs occasionally.

as far as obstacles go, well, some obstacles you just can't prepare for, like the electric eel or whatever. get a good level of physical strength to be able to climb over walls and hills and stuff.

i'm a tall guy, so i don't do well or enjoy the crawl on the belly type obstacles. i through in a little flexibility work outs now and then, like bear and crab crawls.

go to the spartan race website, and sign up for their work out of the day newsletter. it sends you daily work outs that you can adjust to your needs and current physical conditioning.

Crossfit. You're best hope is Crossfit. If you don't know what it is look it up. If there is not a gym near you their workouts are online. You can go as expensve/involved as you can afford or as cheap/simple as you want.
