Do you exercise with your shoes on or off? and why?

I exercise with them on as I get lower back pain if i don't, not sure why...:)

I exercise in my room.. which has pretty soft carpet, so my shoes tend to slip around my foot a bit too much. I've found shoeless to be best on soft carpet. When I workout on our first floor, which has shorter, flatter carpet, however, I must wear shoes..

I do squats and lifts barefoot...better posture and form that way. (I only have tennis shoes...nothing specifically for working out)
  • It depends what I 'm doing. I started doing a workout DVD which is low impact and found that my shoes were making it difficult to pivot and move so I do that one barefoot. When I do cardio based, I wear shoes.

On. It helps to keep steady and not slip doing things like lunges and planking. I jump on the treadmill right after my workout so shoes are a must

On, though the type of shoe depends on what exactly I'm doing.

I used to run a couple times in the treadmill without shoes... however someone told me it's not good to do that? Not sure why? You also say it's a must, what is the exact reason for this?

Lifting - barefoot - I lift at home so I don't have any Health & Safety conscious gym attendents telling me off.

    Cycling - cycling shoes

Running - running trainers (although a rare occurrence at present)

Hiking - walking sandals or boots, weather permitting

Yoga I do barefoot. Lifting, Zumba, running I do in Vibrams (minimalist shoes). Road biking I wear heavier sneakers.
  • Shoes on, always. But then I can't stand being barefoot - I'm paranoid I'll injure myself either by stepping on something, or getting my foot caught under something, or someone stomping on them... has to be shoes on.

I used to love the Nike Free for workouts but they chenged the top and it doesn't feel comfortable anymore.

I was lifting barefoot, but I have a minor achilles injury now (more likely from running than lifting), so I'm wearing shoes and lifting a little lighter until that heals.

I do most of my workouts barefoot. Do what works for you.

I usually go barefoot or with socks on. My living room has carpet so it works out.
