Hi - I've recently joined MFP and have had a 4 lb. weight loss on week one. I'd like to keep it going, and I'm looking for encouragement and support from like-minded folks. It's tough over 50!!

My wife and I are getting on well with the plan so far.

I'm sure it is tough at that age but I know you can do it...It won't be easy but as long as you never quit and really want it.. it can happen!! You got to have faith in yourself and with the help of your friends on here, you will find success!0

I have close to 100 lbs to lose. I hit the "morbidly obese" BMI this past year, which was also the year that I turned 55. Taking care of parents and my job sucking the life out of me in front of a computer for 12+ hours a day and its come to this. So, I buried my last parent on 1/3/13, quit smoking at 2:30 pm after the funeral lunch and a week later, joined the gym. My daughter and her husband have been an inspiration to me. They both have 200+ lbs each to lose and have been successful. I quit working long hours and am being very selfish, not allowing anything to get in the way of my gym time. I am a dance fanatic and have been taking 1 hour dance sessions (zumba and hip hop) daily. So, the journey started on 1/3/13 with smoking cessation and then the weight and exercise on 1/15/13. I feel like I should have lost much more than is showing on the scale. I have gone down 2 sizes, but why the heck doesn't the scale say that I've lost. My daughter tells me not to pay attention to the scale, but in how I fee and that I'm going shopping in my closet. I'm digging holes and lifting heavy rocks where a year ago I couldn't, so there is improvement. Is the problem that I need some weights to go along with the aerobics? Should I be doing more than an hour aerobics every day? Is it that my age just makes it all happen much slower? Is it that smoking cessation slowed down an already sluggish metabolism so my body had to adjust to that? I'm not going to give up because I know the gym is the rest of my life; but am feeling a little discouraged by the scale. BTW, I don't weigh myself weekly. I've been weighing myself about every 2 - 3 weeks.0

Hi I am new here and i am 55 with over a 100 lb to lose, I have had weight issues all my life I understand the loss of parents and family members my dad pass a few years back I lost both my son and husband before that so I get how that all play a part in our weight struggles. I question if at this age and with this much weight to lose how realistic is it that it can be done with out weight loss surgery. But we are all in the same struggle together standing strong supporting each other is a must.

Well..not over 50...but I am 48 so close enough! I know it seems like a lot..but take it 10 pounds at a time and before you know it you will be there. I still have 60 to go, but I will get there!0

Hi. I'm pushing 50 and have lost 52 pounds, with more than 50 left to lose.
I did MFP a year or so ago when I was hoping to track my food in order to work towards getting WLS. Well, that most likely won't happen because of finances, so I've been working on doing it on my own.

Please help me with this !!!! I am not really a computer person and don;t really know how to navigate well on sites. I am 53 and have 100 lbs to lose. My problem is sweets, I joined weight watchers and didn't stick to it. Couldn't stick to it, don't know why ? I hate looking into the reflection of myself in the mirror because I have never been this big. When I look into the mirror I don't really see how big I am, but when I see pictures of me I get really upset. I stopped smoking and that wasn't really hard for me but losing the 60 lbs I gained from doing so is. I love sweets and crave them. Trying this before i agree to weight loss surgery because I know that works but I also know you you give when you get, meaning the other health issues. So if anyone out there, can give some advice on how to make this work I would really appreciate it. I am sick and tired of being this heavy. When I work out I can do it 6 days a week but then something happens and I stop and it's really hard to start again.

Over 50 and over 100 lbs to loose, fits me well. I am hoping that THIS TIME I can do something to lose at least part of my weight. trying not to be defeatest but have been doing this weight loss dance since I was a kid. Here is giving it a try and saying I can do this. I CAN DO THIS!0

My name is Liz and I am 52 years old. I have 160 pounds I would like to lose. I have successfully lost >150 pounds which I maintained over 5 years. I have then been gaining back. Maintained >100 pound weight loss for another 12 years and then regained all of it over a very short time in 2006/2007. Even thought for 17 years I maintained at least a 100 pound weight loss I struggled with binging and weight gain/loss. I had a significant event, my boyfriend died suddenly end of 2006 and have since relied on binging to get me through the day. I have had an eating disorder since age 4 and it kicked back in. I then developed major depression that at times was disabling. My mother died in 2007 and I started working from home which has rendered me very sedentary. None of this made it easy to manage my health but that is part of life. I have now resolved depression, it took years but last year finally found medications that work. I am now trying to deal with my food addiction. I am a recovering alcoholic and drug addict with 24 years clean and know that support is key. I have been isolating in my home, lack of activity and not socializing much. A recipe for failure for sure. I was glad to see this topic and look forward to getting to my life back. Liz0 -
51 year old here. Starting weight 346. Current weight 285. Over 60 lbs down so far, but have my sights on dropping another 80-90 lbs over the next year or so. Active here on MFP daily so feel free to add if you'd like. Best of luck to you.0

I too would like someone to talk to/email. This is my first time on this site. I plan to be honest with others and especially myself. I also have struggled with weight since I was 4. I now have 160 pounds to lose and am age 52. I know it is possible, but oh so hard. I struggle with binging. I have healthy eating until I decide to binge. I do it alone, usually at night and can consume 5,000-10,000 calories in a very short time. I know what to do to make the necessary changes but keep binging. I make a decision to change and within no time I am back to binging. I want to change, my health is being affected by my current choices in life. I am inactive and find myself barely moving, most days 400-2,000 steps. I used to be very active and am athletic and loved to work out. I work from home and sit for 9 hours due to work from home and due to obesity hate to get out of house where others can see me. I look forward to getting support.

Hi I really could relate to your post. I am just starting out but have in past been very successful then always fell back into comfortable behavior that is very damaging to my health and happiness. I gained over 120 pounds in a very short time after my boyfriend died end of 2006. I have now been trapped in some very old, unhealthy coping skills and patterns. I find it helps me to have support. It also helps for me to set short goals and when I reach them gives me more confidence to keep going. I also find planning my meals either every am for the day or 1x per week helps a lot. That way I can plan to have the food in my house and not be tempted to make spur of the moment unhealthy choices. My goal is eat 3 meals per day. I binge and eat large amounts of food and calories in a very short period of time. I have some challenges that I am working on. I work from home and am so inactive. I have a lot of body pain and muscle stiffness and it makes it difficult for me do anything active. It then creates this vicious cycle. I would love to connect with you, I just started MFP yesterday so I am still getting to know all that it offers. Liz0

Hi there. I have been changing my life since January 2013 as well. I have never posted but read these posts regularly. I will be turning 55 in September. I started at 330 lbs and am down 34 lbs. Like you I spent alot of time caring for my parents and other family members and working like a dog at work. It does SUCK that things are moving slowly with my weight loss and I think your daughter is right about the scale. I unfortunately am glued to that thing and have moved it out of the bathroom. I started working with a personal trainer at our local Y in July. I have never been into physical fitness but now I am learning so much. I have gone from a size 30 pants to a size 24 which is amazing in itself. I have more stamina than ever before. I am the person that was getting winded walking to the parking garage after work. I am also working with a great nutritionist and have changed my idea of food to "FOOD IS FUEL". Good luck with your journey.0
