Why do you lift?

It's known that lifting helps maintain muscle mass when dieting. It's also known that it tones your body and makes you look good on a lower weight.

Are there any other benefits of lifting?
I'm a 5'9 guy, 175 pounds, and I'm approaching a skinny-fat state which is undesirable, so I'm considering lifting.

Is 4 times per week enough? Like 2 sets of 50 biceps curls using 10 pounds dumbbells and 2 sets of 30 inclined pushups?

honestly, i'm not sure if i'm getting trolled here, but i'll respond seriously anyway. google stronglifts for a decent lifting routine you can fine on the internet. if you'd like to read even more helpful information on why and how you should lift, buy Starting Strength or New Rules of Lifting and read them cover to cover.

    twice.

To add on to what Dav said...

If you don't have access to equipment, try Convict Conditioning, NerdFitness and You Are Your Own Gym.

Or other strength training options that require some equipment purchase is TRX Suspension training and Sandbag workouts.

Yeah that isn't nearly enough to be considered a decent workout. At 175/5'9 you should be able to curl more than 10 lbs, and you'd want to have way less reps.

Look into a beginning strength program like starting strength or stronglifts, join a gym or get some real equipment and do it to it.

You could also look into body weight exercises, like you are your own gym, but that will only progress you to a point

Health/vanity/to keep up with my soon to be 1yr old & 11yr old. If I didn't lift, I'd look tore up from da floor up like most other chicks in my neighborhood. I'm aiming to keep my body age in my 20's for as long as possible. I want to keep shopping at Victoria's Secret and Express and Forever21, lol. I wanna wear bikinis with pride.

Increase: firmness, bone density, strength, self-confidence, muscle mass, endurence, metabolism (even at rest)
Decrease: arthritis, inches, resting heart rate, fat, back problems, injuries, other heath problems

Those are a few reasons I took up strength. I admit, I was not interested at first. But there are so many reasons to keep going now. I've dabbled in a few things for years at a time, dance, yoga, pilates, running (ok this one not for years), hiking, lifting. I love all these things. I'm a beginner in the lifting world, and I still admit none of the other things will get you as firm as lifting well, if that's your goal.

Stress/anxiety relief, improved posture, improved health, learning to set/achieve goals. The benefits of lifting are endless.

    4x per week is plenty.
You don't need a bunch of biceps work. Focus on compound lifts. Bench/Squat/Deadlift/Rows/Pullups/Pushups.

Is this even worthy of a response?

I lift for my son. I was always in really good shape in younger years through college. Graduated to a desk job career with some great party money and seven years later had creeped by and I had let myself go. I found out I was going to have a son and my heart sank looking in the mirror. 60 plus pounds heavier, muscle mass gone, a complete mess. I want to be someone my son can look up to bc I saw my dad as superman growing up. On his first birthday I had lost around 50 pounds and my lifts were decient again. My only regret is he will inevitably look back at pictures and see me like that. I'm never going back to what I had become. I'm gonna be a good dad to him if its the only thing I ever get right in this life.

primarily, therapy. it offers me a vent and stops me being quite so self destructive.

as a side effect, being strong makes me less likely to injure myself at work, and it it's reassuring for my more disabled clients.

(Still trying to figure out how 100 bicep curls at 10lbs will give you arms bigger than legs)
