Dieting while on vacation

So I'm having an issue. I've lost about 90 pounds so far and I'm finding it really difficult to stay on the wagon. I've been great about logging my food in every day and working out, but I still have issues with vacations and family events. I struggle because my friends and family are all morbidly obese and they eat horribly, but I get so much crap if I barely eat their food or bring my own. I always end up "not being lame" and eating whatever they make and gaining back like 10 pounds or so over a week and then taking a month to lose it again. This summer, for instance, I was on vacation for about 1 out of 2 months and gained 15 pounds. I hate that eating this way for just one day turns into a death spiral of eating nothing but garbage for a week or more. Then I have to get back on the wagon and it's so hard to make it normal routine again. My question is this... should I eat what other people make and make a more conscious decision to get back on track the next day, or should I bring my own food and be "lame" so I feel good when I go to bed at night? I'm so ready to be done losing weight!!!

Sorry you feel unsupported. Only you can stop the yoyoing , either option will work getting back on track the next day or bringing your own food but you have to decide what will make you happiest. Old habits are hard to break but you can do it! Good luck

If it is a one time event (i.e. a picnic/bbq) I always make a healthy salad/side to bring (which usually ends up eaten in my family of just "meat N potato" Midwesterners ;) ). I take about spoonful (like TBSP size -- NO BIGGER) of potato salad, etc. and stick to water to drink and ONE entree (either bbq chicken or a brat, but not both for example).

If it a week-long vacation, I plan to make most of my food or at least eat lightly/healthy most of the day and have a bigger dinner. I log EVERYTHING and work out.

If your family cannot be supportive, then that is their own issue. You are being healthy for YOU and no one else. Just keep doing your thing. Good luck! :)

Even when you're "done" losing weight, hopefully you won't go back to eating as badly and as much as what you were to become obese. Hopefully this is more of a "for life" change for you than a diet.
Congratulations on your amazing loss thus far!
My advice to you is, this is your life-do what is best for you. If someone says something, just say "it's simply not up for discussion" and then do not respond further and walk away if you must. Don't use your families and friends way of life as an excuse to pile the pounds onto your body!
In addition, if you do decide to indulge a bit on vacation then I suggest you move your body more.

IF you had made a Lifestyle Change you would not feel deprived, unsupported, or like "Falling off the wagon". NOR will you probably be back with a regain in 1-3 yrs. if you make permanent Life Changes; Life Changes goes with you because it IS you. Then if you eat something outside of "normal" or go over your eating budget once or twice...no big deal because Lifestyle WILL Normalize itself. Unfortunately " A Diet" is a temporary thing that sucks one of Will Power in the long run, and one may "Fall Off". Example: I ate Veggie Pizza this week, 2 straight days...it did not bother Me at all because I know this is NOT how i Live or eat 95% of the time, so sure enough "back to My Normal" habits and it did not take some super strength or affirmations or even "will power", I just went back to ME, and that ain't pizza! AND I'm HAPPY being ME. Find YOU and take her on your Vacations, and Everywhere you go.
  • Thanks for the input! I get the whole "lifestyle not a diet thing" but I can't wait to boost my calories. I was raised in a house where KFC was a home cooked meal so eating clean has been a struggle for me. I will probably go the route of being lame and just bring my food to family and friend functions. I'm going to get tons of crap for it, but I guess that's their problem. :) Thanks again!
