For medical reasons, I am not allowed to do upper body strengthening. Any ideas on how to lose upper body weight? I've lost 40 lbs but my shirt size hasn't changed hardly at all.

can't spot reduce, continue losing weight and it'll eventually come off0

At all? Forever? Not even "light" exercises supervised by a physical therapist?0 -

Yup.
Sounds like your upper body just naturally stores more fat than your lower body. It will all come off eventually, just be patient.0 -

Eventually- but for now ( and probably not until next year), I can't- even w/ PT. I have a port - doctor says no weight exercises at all.0 -

Then I'd focus on diet and cardio/lower body workouts. As others have said - can't spot reduce but hopefully in a few months you'll be able to include upper body workouts again.0 -

upper body body fat blues. take it from me - I never thought I would see the day that my upper body would reduce in size - but after about 9 months of doing a variety of exercises such as swimming, running, kickboxing and spinning (plus some HIIT weight trainig) I have FINALLY seen a change. I had hated the I way I was so large on top and actually used thisan excuse as to why I couldn't run & swim, when actually I just wouldn't because I felt uncomfortable, but now I totally love that I have firmed up. I started seeing majpr changes after learning to swim, which is the best all around workout for all body parts. My arms, chest and abs transformed and I loss lots of inches and gained lean muscle.
I never know or was confident enough to swim, so I took lessons at the YMCA to learn all the basics, and I continued to swim laps ( although I really didn't like to - until I could build up endurance to swim about a mile without any issues. I also learned to run with the c25k app that is so popular. all this was because a friend of mine wanted to do a Triathlon and I agreed, so I had to figure this all out within 4-5 months last year. I never stopped training and have done many runs, and a couple more Tri's because now I love the feeling of being actively fit.
Now I'm pretty happy with the changes and am working harder still on trying to become more lean, which is 80% diet.
You can do this without lifting any weights - swim, run and do palates with a well balance diet and you will see changes within 4-6 months. I promise. .0 -
As others have said, you can't spot reduce, you have to reduce your overall weight, and hopefully most of it will be fat. I do upper body weight work to increase the size of my upper half and for strength, not to lose weight.
I should add that I'm already at a normal weight and any work is focused on losing vanity pounds and balancing my pear shape. I simply don't have the weight to lose up top.0 -
