Segoli! 55, American Indian, and want more control

Options
Hello all. I am looking of course, to lose weight, but mainly I want to feel better and more in control of my fitness. I do not use any meds yet and would like to keep it that way. But I have gained over 20 pounds in the past year and feel terrible. My bones hurt from the extra weight, swelling from too much sodium, and my sleep is worse. I love to work my body and usually maintain a pretty good level of fitness but obviously lol, it is slipping away. I can use some motivation since none of my friends are on this path. I am Wisconsin Oneida and my community- like most AI communities- really struggles with health and fitness. Our national stats are really bad. My parents do pretty good but live close to the reservation so I can't join them for walks or gardening as I would like as I live in a city more than two hours away. Anyway, I am hoping this format can give me feeling of support as I get going again...

Hello! I'm not Native myself, but I actually grew up on a reservation (Saginaw Chippewa in Michigan). You may have heard of Soaring Eagle Casino being from the Midwest! A few friends of mine are already pre-diabetic back home (I'm only 26). I know that a lot of Native Americans have genes that make them more prone to it. It's definitely something that I personally feel doesn't get enough attention. My home's tribe has a lot of money from the casino and loves to help out the art programs, and building the town, and even helped with the new cancer treatment addition to the hospital. But so far, not much obesity awareness. But I've noticed similar things in certain parts of the south too. Hopefully it'll just keep getting better with sites like this, the shows, and just the general awareness. Feel free to add me! You were right to come here. It's an amazing place for information and support! :D
