Losing weight for cosplay

I'm not sure if anyone else here is into cosplay, so I'll describe it: cosplay is a portmanteau of "costume" and "play." Essentially, you dress up as a character from something you like - be it a TV show, movie, anime, band, whatever. If there's something you can dress up as, it can be a cosplay. Personally, I like to dress up as characters from Supernatural, Doctor Who, and Sherlock.

I've been going to conventions for three years now, and the most recent one I went to caused a striking realization for me - I do not have the best body I can. I looked at the pictures people had taken of me and I was not satisfied. After all of the work on my costume (which, not to blow my own horn, was fabulous), I didn't feel confident as I should. I tried to make poses to hide my less-lovely parts. God forbid I do a pose which would have required me to squat, thus showing my thunder thighs.

I decided to change my sedentary life and work hard so that I can be confident while cosplaying by the time my next convention rolls around.

Sorry for the wall of text. You can add me if you're into cosplay (or want to learn more about it). Pictures of some of my cosplays available on my profile.

I'm an anime fan, and have been to Anime North with some friends who are hard core into cosplaying. I didn't dress up myself, but I can understand how a better physique would make portraying anime characters so much better.

That being said, continue your weight loss journey for yourself, using a specific cosplay or character to aim for is a great idea for motivation! Your appearance can definitely affect your confidence (believe me I know), but remember that just being happy with you radiates the best confidence. Let your personality shine through and try to not care as much about what others think, especially when cosplaying, because you get all sorts of people there! :)

    Good luck!

I'm sure many will agree that thunder thighs are very attractive, and quite a hallmark of superheroes ;-)

But by all means add some definition and muscle!

I don't cosplay but I did read my dad's entire comic book collection from 1950s Marvel/DC through to the alternative 90s :-D

ETA Are you flipping kidding?! I just looked at your profile and you have amazing legs. Check my silhouette for real thunder thighs haha
  • I think your hair would be perfect for Shelock. My family (husband, 3 year old daughter, and myself) are going to a con in January in Doctor Who attire - I'll be River, my husband will be the Doctor, and my kid wants to be the TARDIS.

Anywho - keeping your goal of cosplaying in the fore of your mind will probably be great motivation. The key is just be stable and dedicated. Don't worry about any fad diets -just eat less and move more. This is a post a lot of people use as a reference, including myself: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/975025-in-place-of-a-road-map-short-n-sweet?hl=road+map

Trust me, I've gotten good at hiding my thighs. They look okay up to about 8 inches before the crotch and then *boom*, they're huge.

Actually, that's not my hair, just a really good wig! (Arda Wigs, Benny in Natural Black) I just love to wear wigs around when I'm feeling too lazy to do something nice with my hair.

Thank you for the link! I'm browsing over it now. I hope that I can keep the motivation I have now throughout the rest of the course of my fat loss.

As a six foot person trying to lose weight and reduce fat to rock an Adult Aang, I'm glad I'm not the only one. So far I have til November and if my current loss rate keeps up I'll be good to go sooner which will let me focus on mostly fat reduction (gotta get them abs shiny too!)

OK I am failing to see your thunder thighs!! You look great!

I think if I could go as anything, I would be Zoe from Firefly! (does it matter that I am white??)

I love anime and would love to cosplay at a convention but have always felt way too self conscious for it. I would love to Cosplay as Maylene from Black Butler but I've got a way to go before I feel comfortable enough for that. Working on it though!

Ah! I'm losing weight for cosplay too, somewhat. I'd love to cosplay Sherlock and in general, dress in classier clothing inspired by the show from day-to-day. Good luck! I'm glad I'm not the only one!

Me, too! While I am a strong advocate of the Cosplay if for Everyone philosophy, and most of my costumes so far I have worn at my heaviest, I do think I will be more comfortable portraying a wider variety of characters as my body shrinks. I complete every year at Norwescon with a costuming group, and it would be great to have more choices for our collective creations.
