Mammograms and fat %

I've had 4 mammograms recently due to a family history of breast cancer.

When we looked at the xrays, I could see the tissue and a faint outline of fat- it wasn't huge relative to the tissue mass, but then again, they squished my boobs to pancake flat.

I'm curious to know whether a mammogram xray gives a reasonably clear indication as to whether your boobs mainly consist of fat or not, in terms of weight loss?

I am a mammography tech and can answer that. The faint outline you are seeing is actually your skin outline. The "blacker" areas on the x-ray are fatty tissue, and the white areas are dense fibrous tissue. The ratio can be caused by lots of different things…genetics, age, number of children you've had, or whether you're postmenopausal or not. Weight gain/loss is usually not a factor.

    Hope that helps?
