I don't feel like I've done that well, but I retraced my day step by step and I'm sure I haven't forgotten to log anything or logged incorrectly. So I guess my question is, if I'm not hungry, is it okay for me to just leave it at 400 left over? I'm pretty sure that gives me a deficet of 900.

Does not eating those 400 put you below your BMR for the day? It might be good to eat at least 200 more, as you've probably heard there are lots of dense calorie foods to choose from, like nuts and avocados.
  • My Calorie goal is 1,650. I ate 1,670 and burned 468 through exercise. Should I eat a granola bar or something then? Maybe I'll get hungry later on...

If you've already eaten 1670, then you're done (you've gone over by 20 calories). You shouldn't eat additional calories that you've burned off with exercise.

hey livi, I just bumped the post from Banks about eating exercise calories... hope it's helpful
  • Thankyou, amylynne, I just read it and it was helpful.
  • If you have met your calorie needs before you factor in your exercise, you don't need to make up the difference. Any extra calories burned through exercise is a bonus. If you are working out really, really hard, you might want some extra protein, but no need to make up 400 calories.

So, if I'm reading him correctly, the MFP tool will adjust calories accordingly when the exercise is adjusted?

If you work out and burn 400 cals, you're basically 400 cals LESS than what MFP wants you to eat. When you enter the info you'll notice your remaining calories change. Eat your remaining cals, including exercise calories!!!

    That's correct J.

As to the exercise calories as a bonus thing, not really IMHO. You're body is burning those extra 400 calories, you should be eating them to make the goals work on the site. They aren't a bonus, they are essentially a requirement to stay at where the site is guiding you. If you don't eat them then you basically are not following the site. Not to say being off by a few hundred every once in a while is going to kill the plan, it won't, but much better to make it the exception then the rule. At a minimum not eating your exercise calories will hamper your efforts, and (if taken to extremes) it can actually cause harm if you are dropping well below the minimum you need to function normally.
  • Okay, so I did end up getting hungry, and having the extra Calories ended up being a good thing because my grandfather came home with a big watermelon. Yummy! So I had a piece after my yoga practice and now I'm only about 180 remaining, which I feel much better about.

Yum! I had watermelon tonight too! Isn't it the best snack on such a hot summer day?
