So...little bit of background first...My family and I are going camping tomorrow so I have a lot to do today. One of those things was to return library books. So my kids and I walked the six blocks to the library like we do every week...on the way back, some idiot driver was NOT paying attention and turned left into our crosswalk in an attempt to beat the oncoming traffic...she came 18 inches from hitting my daughter. Now, before anyone tells me I should pay better attention, let me just say I pay attention...I looked at all possible right turns and oncoming traffic...this woman was definitely in the wrong. Even after I reached out to grab my daughter and screamed at her mere inches from her window, she still hadn't noticed us. This kind of thing happens A LOT in my town and I am always on high alert when we are out walking....Anyway, the momma bear in me wanted to chase her down and pull her out of her car and force her to pay attention to me, but the momma hen in me couldn't just leave my children standing on the corner. So I continued on my way spouting the importance of ALWAYS paying attention to your surroundings.
So...when I got home, I was still seething and I needed to release my anger. I figured it was a good time for some TurboFire, so I put in a short, but intense, workout and let my anger go. With my irrational self channeled into something physical, I was able to put my rational self to work coming up with a plan to take to my City Council.
Anyway....my point is that I feel OH so much better after getting my sweat on!! Go Exercise!!!

Good for you!! Can you talk to someone about some guards or speed bumps or other speed limiting devices to protect your children and other children in the neighborhood? Your saying this happens all the time concerns me a bit.0

I am going to take my concerns to City Hall and try to raise awareness for safer crosswalks and sidewalks. It is simply a matter of people not paying attention. What happens most often is that people will pull all the way into an intersection instead of stopping before the Stop sign. I honestly think that the majority of people don't know that the Stop sign is BEFORE the sidewalk/intersection for a reason.0 -

YES!! It really, really is! The workout helped SO much!0 -
Seriously. Complain about that stuff. I would have written down her license plate number and called the police!0

I thought about this 5 minutes after I got home. In the moment, it was confusion because I honestly had NO idea where her car came from (it was a turn I never would have attempted even if there weren't people in the crosswalk) then it was relief, then anger. I didn't even think about license plate numbers until I was already home.0 -

This.
You say this happens all the time, yet you're completely caught off guard and unprepared. You seriously need to get your act together here. I'm not knocking you as a parent. I think you're trying to do your best. But you can't float through life hoping the bad stuff doesn't happen. You take this walk once a month, you say it happens constantly, BE PREPARED. Instead of wasting energy/time reacting, get the license plate #. You carry a cell? You'd better in that town.
I get this crap once in a while when running/walking. Some people just are not watching for pedestrians. You HAVE to make eye contact with the driver. You just have to. If the driver isn't making eye contact with you, you should assume they haven't seen you. Either do not step into the road, or go behind the vehicle. Seriously. this is an unfortunate lesson you have to teach your kids. A big part of road safety is taking care of yourself when others may not be following the rules.0 -
How dare you tell me to get my act together and then try to make it better by saying you think I am doing the best job I can...Did you even read through all the posts? I don't think so....first of all because I said I do this every WEEK and second because I did look EVERY F*******WHERE before I stepped into the crosswalk. This woman took a dangerous turn coming from BEHIND me. So don't judge me on my parenting based on stuff some other idiot does....Not only that, this post was about how my workout helped me with what I was feeling after this experience.0

This is an awfully judgmental thing to say to someone you don't know. If you can't help but be offensive keep your opinions to your self.0 -

Your problem is you're too reactionary. Try slowing down & reading yourself. You saw one line and freaked out. I gave you some decent advice that you obviously need but totally ignored. Oh well. Maybe you should post on a mommy board where everyone's going to tell you you're fabulous, and the world sucks.
Actually I didn't judge, but since you accused me, I'll go there. You say this happens all the time, yet you insist on walking two really little kids through this unsafe area. Save your charming little library walks for when your kids are older, or when you live in a safer area. Problem solved.0 -

Since you do not know me, I will take all of the things you have said with the proverbial grain of salt and assume that you are just one of those people that spout out unwanted advice and judgment to feel better about yourself. I do NOT need to justify myself to someone who would say these harsh things to someone they don't know. I am done wasting my words on you.0 -

^^^^
This is what I was thinking from the start!
You know this sort of thing happens at this place all the time, yet there was still a problem?0 -
Thank you for the judgment instead of the support... I was posting about the good benefits of channeling my anger into something productive instead of just stewing about it, but thank you for showing me why I don't ever post on these forums.
Instead of acknowledging the fact that I am taking my children camping and fostering a love of nature, taking them to the library and promoting a love of reading and taking them for a walk and encouraging physical activity, you imply that I am a bad parent because of the actions of one woman who was IN THE WRONG, who was turning illegally and dangerously and who was obviously not paying attention to pedestrians.
It is not a bad area of town, I just live in a town with ignorant drivers.0
