Question for the ladies about that TOM & weight gain

How much weight do you "gain" while it's that TOM? I started mine yesterday, and weigh in was today and it says i'm up 2.2 lbs since last week. which puts me back at 160, making me technically only down two pounds since i started this a few (i think 3?) weeks ago. I haven't been working out as much because ive been busy and out of down but I have felt like i've done decent on eating well.

I'm so tired of seeing the numbers go up!

And am I the only one who seems to always be hungry on their TOM?

Replies

  • i usually gain anywhere from 2-8 lbs.. except this time i actually lost almost 2 lbs... Just drink LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTS of water.. it'll help with the "weight gain" which is really just water retention!! I usually dont weigh during TOM and if I do I NEVER record it... b'c I know it's gonna be of...

You're not alone. Mine usually goes up just before or when I was actively trying to lose weight I couldn't lose until after that TOM.

I seem to gain about 2lbs at that time of the month, but it disappears as quickly as it showed up once I'm done.
Don't even pay attention to it....stay off the scale until your done. :)

i gain 1 or 1.5 lbs, i think. i drink a lot of water - try to - during this time and keep my sodium levels low. i know it's only temporary, so i don't sweat it. the body is going to do what the body is going to do. i give it a break for a few days and continue with my work out. next week, we all better be on the same page. :)
  • I have always gone up in weight that time of month. As much as 3-4lbs! Its good to watch your sodium intake before hand it helps with water retention. I try not to weigh myself that week. I know its hard not to. The scale always makes me happy the week after though. Hang in there you sound perfectly normal to me. :flowerforyou:

Oh and yes! Seem to crave food alittle more that usual too.

I usually see a gain of 2-4 pounds. Then about 3-4 days into it, I pee my life away & the next day I'm back to normal. I also retain water when I ovulate so I see a little gain in the middle of my cycle too. Oh, the joys of womanhood.

    Hey!
I have terrible hormonal cravings. In the past, I've had weight fluctuations of 2-3 pounds, but lately, I've been not losing, and just staying the same, with 1-2 pounds lost the week after...
Just stick to your plan! Drink that water--it really helps!

My weight goes up the week before ToM and then drops during. I am always so hungry the day or two leading up to the day I start and then when I'm on. And the healthy snacks don't always cut it!! Drink lots of water, it helps!

Good news. You usualy weigh your least: one week after the start of TOM. Look forward to a weigh in then and keep hydrated and mobile. I used to vary about 5 pounds but with exercising right through and drinking lots of water it is about 3ish now. I never take those numbers seriously. I just observe and look forward to my new weight a week later.

I understand that some ladies even gain as much as 10 pounds. So if I were you, I'd consider 2 a loss! kcollins is right about the water. I was retaining water with my second pregnancy and they told me to drink as much as I could. If your body knows it is getting more than enough water, it will actually release some of water it is holding in your tissues. Don't worry about this. It will be gone next week, and probably more weight with it.
  • Thanks ladies. I knew before weighing myself that the scale was going to depress me and still I couldn't help myself! I'll try harder next time to steer clear of it next month. maybe weigh in the day after I stop?

I'm the same way. I usually gain 1-4 pounds the week before and then the day I start I usually drop back down to where I was.

I usually gain 2 to 8 pounds the week prior to TOM coming. If I stick with sensible eating while TOM is on, my weight usually goes back down and I may lose some. It depends on me keeping eating in check. Which is very hard for me to do when TOM is in town. I consider it great if I maintain weigh loss after TOM leaves.

I just wait until my normal weigh-in day to see what I weigh to keep it the same day/timeframe between weigh ins.

I hate my periods more than anything. They are evil. I gain anywhere between 3-7 pounds. YES really, that much! I too do not weigh myself because that is not an accurate indicator of my true weight. By day 2 I am usually back to normal but like I said I try not to weigh myself. And some periods are worst than others in terms of symptoms like hunger. I have found that if I am good about eating protein and drinking lots of water and eating 5x a day I can usually manage the hunger pains. Also exercise is really important that TOM because not only does it get the blood flowing which helps control back pain and cramps but it also helps reduce my appetite. Good luck!

It's all normal. Usually 3-5 lbs gain for me, then by 3 days after stopping it is gone. Besides drinking LOTS of water, stay away from anything with sodium! On normal days excess sodium may cause 1-2 lbs difference, but on TOM I swear it is more like an additional 10! Last TOM I made the mistake of having marinaded chicken (high sodium) and a packaged pasta dish (more sodium) and gained 8 lbs during TOM. Took 4 days for it to go away. I do weigh myself during TOM, but don't record it until my next normal weigh in day after TOM.
