gaining weight with insanity

hiya there, looking for some advice, im becomming disheartened with insanity, I'm coming to the end of my second week of insanity and ive actually put nearly half a stone on! I'm overweight, weighing just over 18 when i started, now I'm over 18 and half, I've cut my food intake down to just 3 meals per day having a yoghurt on a morning, sandwich on afternoon and grilled meat with rice or baby tatys for tea. I do my insanity every morning before work at 7am and i have also been going to the gym 4 times per week after work doing atleast 40 mins cardio on things like the bike, rower and cross trainer and I tend to do the weight loss programmes on them, as well as a half hour swim after.

I do feel my stomach becoming a little tighter in rather than my big ol gut sticking out and feeling a little fitter however I'm concerned at how much I've put on and just seeing if this kind of thing is normal or something I should be worried about, I was hoping it would just be water retention but I'm having second thoughts on this now

any advice welcome whether I need to change it up or stick to it, its just a little disheartening the effort going in and gaining weight

  • not really as im not eating many meals, i think im hitting around 1400 per day by looking at what I have been eating, im going to start to keep a track so i know, i know in the guide it says 1400 i think for weight loss.

I don't know how much a stone is. Often what happens is you retain water in your muscles when you start or increase exercise. It has to do with glycogen stores. This causes an increase on the scale but it shouldn't be huge, a few pounds.

If you are truly gaining weight, you are eating too many calories. My suggestion would be to start accruately measuring (scale is best) and consistently logging your food
  • half a stone is around 7 pounds I believe so would this amount be too much? I've actually cut down on what I eat I used to eat utter crap and maintained around 18 stone, im starting calorie counting from today

    there is your problem ^

you are probably under estimating your calories and are really in a surplus..

get a food scale, start weighing everything, and start logging everything you eat...

I think you are eating too little, if you are accurate in your estimate. Find out your TDEE and BMR (check out this post: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/654536-in-place-of-a-road-map-2-0-revised-7-2-12)

You will retain water in your muscles at the start, which leads to increases on the scale but not in fat. Also, you need to nail the calories. 1400 is way too low for insanity, esp. if you are overweight to start. Use the calorie guide on the Beachbody site to get a realistic idea of what you need, and then monitor your macros.

Hi! I would definitely take a look at your nutrition. Eating clean is the key. Are you following the nutrition guide given with the program? I would take a look at that. I do agree with some of the replies on your weight gain, but nutrition is the key to achieving success with any fitness program. You're already on MFP so I would utilize the site in logging your food and concentrate on staying away from any type of processed foods, refined sugars, and concentrate on eating lots of fruits and vegetables. Good luck!

While I don't disagree with eating more veggies and whole foods, processed food, etc will not affect weight loss so long as you are eating at a deficit.
Many people lose weight without "clean eating". That and the fact that there is no real definition of "clean eating". It means many things to different people.
